The Antiracist Heart: A Self-Compassion and Activism Handbook Reviews

This is the companion workbook to Roxy Manning's "How to have Antiracist Conversations", which I recommend you read first.
The Antiracist Heart challenges the reader to look deep, much deeper than you have ever looked previously at your own inter and intrapersonal issues. Taken seriously, the work sheets allow one to see, hear, feel and understand more of the complexities within oneself and in community.
Understanding how one's own microaggressions effect others regardless of the original intent of what was said/done is accomplished without blame or shame and opens possibilities for improvement in how one can attempt to avoid harm to others as well as opening a pathway for healing when harm occurs.
This is not a quick read. Take time with it. One chapter at a time. One worksheet at a time. You may want to read this, slowly, with a study group or a study buddy. This book is a guide for understanding and practicing Beloved Community, a community in which everyone's needs are equally important and equally considered.
White folks like me are not "let off the hook", we have a lot of work to do gaining trust with our global majority friends, neighbors and community. It will be a bumpy, scary, frustrating and satisfying ride. We will need lots of practice with each other before we can reach out competently.
Beloved Community is the answer to my hopes and dreams. This book and The Anti-Racist Heart give me a pathway to share with others to get to Beloved Community. Please join in. -
This book is a rich companion to How To Have Antiracist Conversations, though I think it also stands on its own quite well. The authors combine their expertise in nonviolent communication, Kingian nonviolence, and the neuroscience of our emotions and actions to open up new avenues for action, compassion, and understanding. We can do something about racism! We can learn to have challenging conversations that create both connection and change. There is an alternative to "cancelling" those who say or do atrocious things, if we can find a way to enter into the kind of dialogue that creates understanding and invites changes. Sometimes that person we need to enter into dialogue with is ourselves -- this book provides journaling prompts and more that have helped me in coming to a place of greater peace and possibility around my own errors and shortcomings. If you are looking for practical tools for addressing microaggressions, building understanding in multiracial groups or families, and engaging others in the struggle for societal or institutional change, this book is for you.

Dr. Roxy Manning's book, The Antiracist Heart, takes Non Violent Communication (NVC) from theory to action. For those familiar with NVC this book facilitates discussions about race. Those unfamiliar with NVC will receive the best possible introduction on how NVC can be effectively applied to the most difficult circumstances. If you are interested in a roadmap for negotiating barriers to your own full humanity, this book is a must read. If you want to add to your current efforts to contribute to Beloved Community, this book will be of tremendous service.

Just what I needed to help me with the harsh social environment in the world now. Looking forward to doing the exercices and sharing with others.
