Crafty Chloe Reviews

  • Mary

As a crafty girl myself, I could relate to this book, especially these lines: ..."anything becomes less boring with googly eyes on it" and "After dinner Chloe went to her room to doodle. Doodling helps her think. Thinking gives her ideas. Some ideas are pretty spectacular and require lots of glitter." TRUTH.

Chloe isn't good at sports, or dancing, but she IS good at making things. But when she decides to make something for her friends' birthday, she worries that it won't be good enough.

The illustrations are delightful and packed with details.

PS: Chloe has a GLUE GUN HOLSTER.

I love this book and so do our girls. I love that Chloe makes her own gifts and that they came out wonderfully. I love that she mentions that her grandma taught her to sew. I love that the 'mean' girl, London, ends up being humbled by Chloe's remarkable gifts. And I love that Chloe isn't mean-spirited after London was mean to her. Overall, I think this is a fun book with a terrific message and I'm sure our girls will want to visit

Crafty Chloe will be attempting to make a homemade gift for a friend.

  • Steph

LOVE this book for little artists. As always, Kelly DiPucchio is just fabulous!

  • Barbara

Unlike some of her classmates, Chloe is no good at sports, ballet or video games. But she is good at making things. When another classmate buys the present she planned to buy for Emma's birthday party, she decides to make something but is stymied about what to create. She eventually comes up with the perfect gift and even helps a snooty classmate on the way to the party. The pencil and digitally colored illustrations do a wonderful job of showing the personalities of Chloe and London as well as Chloe's crafty nature.

Oh, I love when I find the perfect "girl" picture book! Chloe reminds me of my daughter...creative, huge imagination, constantly building/creating/drawing/gluing...Chloe is trying to decide on the perfect gift for her friend Emma. She designs, imagines, creates...I LOVE the message of this story. First, it is important to ALWAYS be kind...no matter what someone else does or says. And second, using your imagination and creativity always makes the best gift. Fun, fun book...and it has a website where you can go and try your hand at all the crafts she does in the book!

Chloe isn't good at sports or dancing...but she is good at sewing and crafting. One day she goes shopping for a gift for her friend Emma's birthday. She finds the perfect gift but (snotty) London has already bought the same gift for Emma. So Chloe decides she will make Emma the perfect gift. If only she can come up with an idea of what to make. Finally, she has an idea and gets busy... Darling story and there is a website with step by step instructions to make different craft projects: craftychloe.com.

    Oh. My. Goodness.

My 5 year old received this book for her birthday and, after reading it, I want a copy just for me. It is delightful in every way AND teaches a number of valuable lessons without jamming it down children's throats (a pet peeve of mine).

The illustrations are wonderful and the story is a delight.
Oh, and did I mention it has a website where there are instructions in making the crafts shown in the story?! I'm dying at the perfectness of it all.

    A very definite 5 STARS.

  • reading is my hustle

Darling with a capital D! This reminds me so much of our #2 (who still likes to make all of her gifts). The story, the illustrations, and the colors all work together to tell a VERY sweet story. LOVED.

Crafty Chloe decides to make her best friend's birthday gift, and even being mocked by a mean girl won't stop her. Great character-building book; great for girls who love arts and crafts; great for teaching the value of believing in yourself and what you do.

  • Melissa

Appreciate Chloe's realistic behavior & reactions throughout the story (feeling confident at home, bravado in reaction to scorn & disapproval, wanting to avoid the issue, and especially, "More than all the googly eyes in the world, Chloe wanted to say, 'Well, good luck with THAT!").

  • Franki Sibberson

I love the whole idea of this book--making things! And I love the character! And I can't wait to see how the site builds with things for kids to make. Very fun.

  • Paul Hankins

The best part of adding this book today? That I got to hear Kelly DiPucchio read this aloud in her session at the Michigan Reading Association conference. This counts, right? (wink)

  • Elisabeth

delightful! chicken pops - love it! Pretttty sweet website too. Hope Chloe catches on like Fancy Nancy. She's a great character.

  • Alyson

"anything becomes less boring with googly eyes on it." Yes! The dog on the cover looks like our dog did throughout Rachel's childhood.

  • Donalyn

Chloe loves to make things, but she's stressed about making a homemade present for her friend's birthday. Charming book and I love that the website includes an ongoing list of craft ideas for kids.

  • Rebecca

Crafty gals now have a heroine in picture book form! Chloe has never been one for sports or videogames...she loves MAKING THINGS. <3

    Love the many craft-supply similes.

  • Cosette

I hate crafts. This one snuck up on me. I should have known better.

As a crafter, I found this book to be simply delightful. Crafty Chloe by Kelly Dipucchio is a children’s book telling the tale of a little girl, Chloe, who is a DYI crafter, who loves to sew. Chloe looks for a birthday gift for her friend, Emma. Knowing that Emma wants a doll. Chloe heads for the toy store only to discover that another classmate, London, has purchased it. Disappointed, Chloe must come up with another idea. After brainstorming, she comes up with a great idea. She will sew a dress for the doll in Emma’s favorite color.

I enjoyed this book. I appreciated Ms. Dipucchio’s two-prong plot line. The first prong shows how a little girl struggles to find the perfect birthday gift for her friend. The second prong focuses on how Chloe deals with a mean student. The illustrator, Heather Ross, did a superb job with the illustrations. They were simple and colorful thereby enhancing the text. If you have a little girl, this book will definitely be amongst her favorites.

My girls and I really enjoyed this book. Claudia liked the girly illustrations, while I liked the lesson the book teaches. It also realistically captures the feelings (sometimes insecurity) and behaviors that children (and some adults) have -- including the one-up exchange between "snobby" London and Chloe. One of the lessons, I think, is that not all presents are bought. Use your creativity and what you have available to create a truly unique gift for someone. In all, the ending is my favorite part. I think I actually said "aaawww" out loud with a big smile.

  • Peggy Archer

Chloe is very good at making things. When London beats her to buying the perfect birthday gift for Chloe's best friend, Emma, Chloe brags that she is 'going to make something special that you can't even buy in a store.' But can she make something just as good as the new flower girl that Emma really wants? And can she be forgiving enough to help London repair the damage to her perfect birthday gift?

  • Nicola

Miss 4 and I really enjoyed this. Everyone has different things they are good at (or struggle at) and Chloe is really good at designing and making things. Sometimes the best birthday gifts are ones that are made instead of bought.

Miss 4 and I like to explore different books and authors at the library, sometimes around particular topics or themes. We try to get different ones out every week or so; it's fun for both of us to have the variety and to look at a mix of new & favourite authors.

  • Grace & Zoe

Crafty Chloe is a huge hit in our household. With two crafty six-year-old girls, they can really relate to this book. They love Chloe and all the things she makes. The illustrations are fun, and the books are just easy-to-read and enjoy. As a parent, I love how Chloe solves her own problems, and is such a clever, crafty kid. Honestly, there's really nothing *not* to like about this book.

  • Joanne Roberts

With Crafty Chloe, Kelly DiPucchio does it again, showing her diversity and skill as an author. Her book introduces a complex character with conflicting emotions and the illustrator does a superlative job of filling in the gaps. A straightforward narrative with heart. Brimming with inspiration and message with not a touch of didactic tactics. Link to craft activities in the back.

  • Jo Oehrlein

Very maker-positive story, but also a good story about how to be nice to people, even those who haven't been nice to you.

Chloe doodles to get inspiration and sews clothes for her dog. She likes rhinestones and googly eyes. But, what can she make for her good friend's birthday?

  • Megan

This is a wonderful book. I look forward to seeing what else this author has and if it's as good as this.

  • Jennifer

Good example of a story with an upper-age range main character.
