Bangladesh: The Unfinished Revolution Reviews
-
An informative book. However, one must consider that it was written in 1979, a lot more of the history of the first decade after 1971 has been known since. The author is very biased towards Col Taher and fails to mention any flaws in his agenda for Bangladesh just as he is too judgmental on Sheikh Mujib, painting him as an out and out failure, disregarding the fact that he had a mountainous job of rebuilding a war-ravaged country and a faltering economy with worldwide spikes in the prices of oil and other commodities. Lifschultz was a staunch supporter of the left, almost a blind supporter and hence never mentioned the plain and simple dacoities that the Sharbohara Party of Siraj Sikder perpetrated. However, he was spot on in pointing out the coterie whose rampant corruption caused immense hardships to the masses. The treacherous nature of Ziaur Rahman is also well portrayed.

A difficult read but a fascinating look into the politics behind the birth of a nation. This book was once banned by the Bangladesh government.

Bangladesh, The Unfinished Revolution)

The most cruel betrayal of the history of Bangladesh which took place in 1975 when Mujib's fellow commanders killed him and his family brutally. Sheikh Mujib is the founding father of Bangladesh who wanted to reconstruct the country after a devastating nine month war it survived. By doing this he faced several obligations by the fellow leaders and his own countrymen. But it was beyond anyone's dream that the day of 15 August would come in the history of Bangladesh.
Mr. Lifschultz was pretty close to our liberation war as he has monitored the incidents both of the 1971 and afterwards and he tried to find out the real truth behind the events. As a journalist he interviewed several people, most of them are govt. officials. He tried to find out the American connection and role behind this murder. As America wasn't our friendly allies in the liberation war and also recognized lately in the UN, he tried to follow their intentions most. Though it was already proved that the murder was a pure conspiracy of some corrupt officers of Bangladesh army under the influence of the former foreign minister Mushtaque.
Just because of the power greed of some people this coup has been happened. He also explained the role of Cornel Taher and his bravery which was an important event of the history who later murdered by the same govt. they formed after Mujib's death. It was inevitable that Mujib's death has decrease the country's growth which the people will never forget. The country has almost backdated 16 years when there was military govt. was formed. And obviously military ruler couldn't find a way either to reconstruct what Mujib had dreamt long ago. The country has suffered in the long run because of that coup and later the others. -
Good but biased. The author is a blind supporter of Marxism-Leninism and Col Abu Taher. He hates capitalism from the bottom of his heart. He thinks all the Marxist are angels and all the capitalist are demons. Like Abu Taher the writer believes in the Utopian and unrealistic concept of a rank-less army without any hierarchy. The book read like a political leaflet of JSD (National Socialist Party) against Ziaur Rahman who believed in capitalism and free market economy.
-
More of a research article than a book. Partial information given. The writer is biased towards socialism. However, when the book was published, it was forbidden to talk about Taher's death penalty and the illegitimate tribunal. It's a sad account (partial) of post independence struggle of Bangladesh.

a rather arguably unbiased look into the events of 71 till 75 in bangladesh's birth and history. Severely heavy, took me a while to finish but definitely worth every penny and all the time required.
I recommend this highly -
