Based on sermons originally delivered by Bishop Tom Wright during Easter 2007, this is a book for Lent that uses the story of a coal-mining town in northern England as a modern parable for loss and rebirth. The background history of the town, the closure of its mine, the subsequent strike and then the regeneration of the area, is given in the introduction, allowing readers to fully appreciate the context of the book, and make the most of its study questions.

I thought I knew my Bible well until I started reading this man's exegesis.
This is a collection of 7 sermons and meditations written during holy week whilst Mr Wright was Bishop of Durham, addressed specifically to an English north eastern colliery town within his see.
It's current situation in the wake of a pit disaster and then closure in the 1980's; it's history of trouble and loss is brought into relief against Jesus' journey to the Cross, itself set against the background of Isaiah's servant songs, seeking any relevance that may be found there.
A book that exemplifies the pastoral application of biblical study to a specific situation and nowhere near as dry as that might sound.

Having grown up in the North East of England it was interesting to read the historical introduction to this slim volume and to compare the town of Easington then with the now.
This is essentially a series of sermons/meditations for Holy week using the mining village of Easington as a backdrop and when read during that period is very helpful and interesting.
