The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: A Commemorative Pop-Up Reviews

This was truly magnificent. Sabudas pop-up art is outstanding. My favorite are the Emerald City and the balloon scene. Simply perfection.
Overall, I was surprised by how much I actually enjoyed the story itself. I have read an abridged version of The Wizard of Oz in fifth grade but forgot everything and wow, this has the potential to unfold into an amazing adventure. I actually own the full version, so I'm excited to read it next month and give my full thoughts on the plot line. So far all I can say is that I love the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man and the Scarecrow. :) -
We’ve had this book for a while, but only now have I sat down with the kid to actually read through all of it, instead of just grabbing snatches of story until everyone gets too distracted fiddling with the popups. The adaptation is okay, though nothing to write home about, but the popups are absolutely SPECTACULAR. I’ve had a few pop-up books as a kid, some rather elaborate for their time, but nothing compares to this intricate work of art. Every page is crafted in detail, with many sub-pages and smaller popups as you dig through the story. The only real issue with the book is that it is perhaps a bit too elaborate for its own good and thus too delicate, so it is hard to let children poke through it unsupervised, risking easy damage from tiny, curious, but not quite coordinated fingers.

After my first encounter with Sabuda's work I must admit that the book's three-dimensional illustrations are very eye-popping and well-crafted. All the standup mini works of art allow the reader to interact with the book. Such a version of one of the most known stories for children brings all the fabulous events to life and makes an illusion that the reader is a part of the story. I would recommend this book to everyone, not only children, because it is a masterpiece of children picture books.

This pop-up version of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is stunning. The story may be a little brief (being as it is abridged), but the brevity is more than made up for by the incredible and vibrant artwork created by Sabuda.

My parents sent this book over for my daughter, and it is easily the most amazing, thoughtfully designed pop up book I have ever seen. The story is the story you know, but the construction and attention to detail is fantastic. I'm only sad that my daughter is a little too young to read the book herself, since she'd probably destroy it. It's fragile, and she's not even two years old yet.
I guarantee she will love this book when she is old enough to appreciate it, and I would recommend it to anyone with children. -
I thought I new the story of Oz until I studied the book in college. (Thank you Anne and Phil!) Not only did I discover how incredibely rich the story truly was, I was amazed to find out how much of his own beliefs and world Baum put into this classic. It is definitely worth reading over and over again.

I had the pleasure of reading this book again to some little ones recently. In general I’m not a huge fan of “pop up” books but this one really takes the concept to the next level, and for a classic story. The first thing you notice is the book is quite thick and upon opening the cover, you’re greeted with a tornado that springs up about ten inches. The book only has seven major pages but each is impressive, and the text of the story is then included on smaller sub-pages which open as insets, and which include smaller pop-ups and illustrations. Kids love the detail level and fingering things, putting on the small green film glasses when the Emerald City is entered, and spinning the hot air balloon which is one of the later pop-ups. They also love pointing out the small discrepancies between the film and the book which stem from the book being true to the Baum’s original, which I think is cool.
In an age with so much other content for kids, it’s nice to see this story is not “dead”, there are so many nice elements and messages to it beyond the imagination Baum clearly showed: being brave in a world that is sometimes evil and scary, being confident and understanding that you may already have within you something that you perceive as a shortcoming, being smart enough to see through charades such as the one the “Great and Terrible” Oz perpetuates until this motley crew comes along, and lastly, of course, the universal sentiment of trying to go home. If you’re looking for a very nice way of reading this story to kids, this “queen mother” of pop up books would be a great choice. -
A great pop-up book adaptation of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. I enjoyed how Robert Sabuda used smaller pages on the larger pages throughout the book to add even more of Baum's text within the pop-up book. There was much more of the story than I had expected because he did this. This book was one of the best I have seen within the medium, and I enjoyed how it told the story.
Robert's pop-up art is incredible, especially Oz's hot-air balloon and the tornado at the beginning. This is not a perfect adaptation, but I enjoyed it so much. Many of the pop-ups in the book are intricate and might not be the best for younger children. You have to be careful when you close the book.
Overall, this is a beautiful adaptation of a book I adore with all my heart. It is stunning to look at and is an excellent introduction to the Oz series. I will definitely be trying to pick up Robert's other pop-up adaptations, such as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, Peter Pan, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Little Mermaid. -
Absolutely amazing pop up book. If you can get your hands on a copy, don't hesitate. The detail in the illustrations and the details in the pop up mechanics are unbelievable - pretty much the best pop up book I have seen.
This version of 'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz', although shorter than the original Baum work, follows closely to its details and gives you a sense of its authenticity. For example Dorothy's shoes are silver and not red in this edition. The prose is of it's time but adds to the charm of the book.
'The Wonderful Wizard of Oz: A commemorative Pop-Up', is an impressive vehicle to entice reading and imagination in children, not only that, it makes for an awesome collectors piece! -
Wonderful, fantastical eye candy courtesy of Sabuda’s masterful gravity defying paper engineering magic, each page opens up to an immersive interaction bringing life to the classic Oz narrative. And for each main page, there are smaller books sections within that open up to even more paper engineering magic.
Sabuda’s inventive approach is so refreshing and inspiring.
This book is great, not only for a fresh take of the classic Wizard of Oz narrative (best version as of current imho) but also a great resource for those keen to delve into the possibilities and technical scope of paper engineering. -

OH. MY. GOODNESS! I've always loved pop up books, but this one is beyond belief! The tornado!!! The hot air balloon! I bought it for my granddaughter for Christmas, but it SO awakened the wonder of my own inner little girl that I will have to buy another for myself! Thank you Robert Sabuda for bringing us this magic.

A delightful book my husband found at the local Goodwill-As-Is. This volume is too delicate for small children, but should be appreciated by older children and adults. It's a short version of L. Frank Baum's book. The pop-ups are intricate and need to be handled gently. The illustrations are very much In the style of the originals. This book is a treasure!

E has been really into the Wizard of Oz lately, my husband showed her the anime version from the 80s and she loved it. So we got out the pop-up book and she has wanted me to read it several nights in a row now. I read her the actual book when she was a little baby, it used to lull her to sleep, but maybe she'll be old enough to enjoy it in a year or two.
