This is not merely the story of a city. It is a visual comment on the development of a prairie urban area. It represents the stages not only of Topeka but also of Kansas and the American West. As such it is a unique document in Kansas and American history.

While it is certainly interesting, this book tends to concentrate overwhelmingly on illustrations over actual text. For example, apparently part of the U.S. 35th Division in World War I came from Topeka but the only mention of the division was a single photograph of the division marching through the city after the war.
