Twelve-year-old Gemma doesn’t know where to turn. She is being adopted by relatives she didn’t know she had. The foster family she has loved all her life is breaking up. The farm where they’ve lived is being sold. Gemma needs to fix things fast—if she can only figure out how.

Now she has found the she’ll get herself an angel. Her increasingly desperate efforts to earn one, by turns heartbreaking and hilarious, lead her to a confrontation with her painfully mysterious past, and ultimately to an understanding with her new family that holds out hope for them all.

This engrossing novel offers a fresh and winning portrait of a quirky heroine with a unique voice, a passionate heart, a mission to accomplish, and the kind of offbeat logic that can cause even the most careful plans to go awry.

This was a very emotional book, the character Gemma pulls you in right away. From the beginning you feel tied to her and the mess she has for a life. She is a foster girl who has spent most of her life living with a farm family who cared for her and she saw it as the only home she ever had. Life there was easy and predictable. Out of the blue one day people show up to take her home saying they are her real family even though she has never met them. I spent the first half of the book really frustrated with her real family for being so cold and detatched. As the story went on it becomes more clear that Gemma is creating more problems for herself by not trusting her family and trying to fix things for herself. I would recommend this book to realistic fiction readers who like reading about older kids dealing with tough situations in their lives. There isn't any boy / girls stuff to make it a romance, but it is about life and family. Great read.

Gemma has been raised by a foster family since she was 4. She's come to enjoy life on the farm and the A's know how to help her cope with her problems and she finds grouding in the farm animals and foster siblings that surround her. When the farm is to be sold and homes are to be found for the foster children, Gemma is turned over to her aunt and uncle who have been raising her twin brother Garnett. Her new home resembles nothing of farm life with the A's, and her distress at being torn from her "real" family brings up a variety of issues that have been lingering and haunting her. We watch helplessly as Gemma tries to find a way back to the A's involving plans that are unrealistic, dangerous, and damaging. The story is a long heartbreaking journey.

I did enjoy this book with the excellent closure at the end after the main character had a tumultuous time of finding out who she is, where she needs to be and working out her feelings toward everything.

Kind of weird story, but okay overall. Main character Gemma, a 12-year-old orphan, relies on angels to help her connect with her new family.
