Very much looking forward to making some of my favorite comfort food recipes which I found in Ellie Krieger’s Comfort Food Fix. My husband wishes me to start with Classic Meatloaf. Then I would like to try Shepherds Pie. This cookbook should keep me busy for awhile, and the recipes may even make me healthy. How about that!

I love to cook and eat good food. I have a great interest in nutrition and a healthier lifestyle. I do not cook with artificial ingredients for the sake of saving calories and preparing a "lite" food. The recipes in "Comfort Food Fix", by Ellie Krieger, are comfort foods "made over" into healthier versions. However, they are made with real ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen. Real food! With a true understanding of the properties of each ingredient and the cooking techniques that make the most of every morsel, Ellie Krieger serves up scrumptious dishes for every meal--snacks too! The "15 Fix Factors" she uses to formulate these fabulous foods are common sense combined with cooking skill and a thorough knowledge of food usage and preparation. By keeping in mind when to use her three categories of ingredients, "Usually", "Sometimes", and "Rarely", you will learn a new way of eating and cooking that is painless and pleasurable. Check out these tempting treats: "Crispy French Toast Fingers with Blueberry Maple Sauce"; "Shrimp Spring Rolls with Apricot Ginger Dipping Sauce"; "Triple Onion French Onion Soup"; "New Classic Meat Loaf"; and my favorite, "Grandma's Chocolate Pudding". This a gorgeous book--beautifully photographed--and the food is definitely good enough to eat!

Wish Elle was still on Food Network

Just wish there were more recipes because I am so picky. I also can't stand yogurt, so for those recipes that require it, I wish other options were given. Other than that, an awesome book. I wish Elle was still on Food Network. She also gives you great tips before the recipe section begins.

    Another wonderful cookbook by
Comfort Food Fix: Feel-Good Favorites Made Healthy!

    Nothing new ...

The food sounds good but it’s nothing new or exciting. She uses a lot of whole wheat pasta, breadcrumbs, etc. to make things healthier. The dessert recipes outweigh the entrees which is frustrating. Who needs that many desserts?

  • TimetoFangirl

I probably only found about six recipes here that I plan on trying. Still, it was easy to read and I always appreciate cookbooks that focus on weeknight options.

When winter weather hits and I'm craving comfort food, this book continues to save me! I can have meatloaf and pasta without missing out on the flavors and foods I love. Highly recommend.

I am an Ellie Krieger fanatic, so reviewing this book is really a no-brainer for me. Ellie is the star of the Food Network's Healthy Appetite. On a TV network where you have the likes of Paula Deen and Guy Fieri, finding recipes for healthy, delicious food can be hard to come by. Ellie is a welcome respite in the land of supersizing fries for 39 cents and eating meatballs the size of your head. She has a knack for putting together simple everyday ingredients you can find at any grocery store to make something delicious.

Ellie's third cookbook, which should be another bestseller, is Comfort Food Fix: Feel-Good Favorites Made Healthy. In it, she takes Grandma's dishes and other foods that normally have a very high caloric count, and makes them healthier. From breakfast to dessert, and everything in between, Ellie's 150 recipes will have you salivating. I have already made the Lemon-Dill Pita Chips for a snack, the Quick Marinara Sauce (If you are still buying Ragu, you don't know what you are missing.), and the French Bread Pizza. Tomorrow, we are having the Garlic Breadsticks with spaghetti. How does Double Chocolate Bread Pudding sound? Ever think Chicken Parmesan could be healthy for you? It can! And it can be crispy too!

If you are thinking that you could not make the above without some sort of "disgusting" health-food ingredient, you are incorrect. The only think you need to do to make Double Chocolate Bread Pudding healthier is use half whole eggs and half egg whites, use dark chocolate, and use whole-grain bread. There is no tofu in sight.

I do realize that color cookbooks are expensive to make, but I would have preferred to see a photo of all completed recipes. You do not get a picture with every one. Those you do get are beautiful. However, even without a picture, if you follow the recipe to a "T", I guarantee that you will come out with something absolutely delicious. Thank you again, Ellie!

Comfort Food Fix promises to take our favorite comfort foods and remake them into healthier dishes.

I have used some of Krieger's recipes in the past and been well pleased with them. However, this book has been a bit of a disappointment. First, I found few recipes that resembled anything that I call comfort food! [I said few... there are some, however.] These were the more sophisticate of choice, evidently! [Perhaps it's simply my own down to earth choice of comfort foods that makes these seem a bit beyond what I like.]

I also found that while fats were reduced in almost every recipe, sodium seldom took more than a minimal dip, with a few exceptions. However, those exceptions substituted other items that totally remade the dish instead of simply allowing the dish to remain as true to original form as possible. [Give me Diabetic Cooking magazine any day!]

The recipes were "okay" that I tried, and I am sure there will be more that I will yet try, I just do not care for the four I picked at random to sample, and I especially can't call them "comfort food".

The layout was superb in the book, and the photography was excellent.

While I did not like the few recipes I have tried thus far, I still have to give this book Five Stars and a Thumbs Up!

Nothing new here. These are standby recipes that have just been rehashed over and over. True, they are written to be healthier but I have to say I was a bit disappointed. Basic oven fried shrimp, hearty beef stew, pumpkin bread? If you are into cookbooks, you know these are basics and should already have seen these about a gazillion times elsewhere. No originality here. Plus, the pictures are sparse for such an enticing coffee style book.

Ellie Krieger is one of my favorite cookbook authors, and Comfort Food Fix did not disappoint. I cooked 26 of the recipes from this book over the past year, and Ellie's healthier takes on classic comfort foods yielded solid, tasty results. Among the highlights: Honey-Crisp Oven Fried Chicken, Triple Onion French Onion Soup, Better Blueberry Muffins, Corn Bread with Sweet Corn Kernels, and Banana Pudding with Vanilla Wafers. All of these recipes I will make again and again!

  • Lisa

I found this super cheap at Books A Million and had to have it. The recipes in this book look so delicious. I think that 95% of them i could make and want to eat. I love, at the bottom of the page there is a calorie counter for the original and then there is a calorie counter for the modified version that Ellie makes. In a previous cookbook she had a recipe for pumpkin muffins and that was a divine. I got sold on her with those and the wheat pancakes. Yummmm!!!

  • Tapley

    BLTs with avocado - good
    meatloaf - ok, not awesome
The pumpkin-cranberry bread was ok; I doubt I'll make that again.
    Sole almondine: yum, do again
    Stuffed pork chops - good
Chicken fried rice, just meh, won't do again
Zucchini walnut bread - good, will do again, worked well for potluck
Cassoulet - quite tasty, not hard, big hit with husband

Lots of snack recipes to try

I really like Ellie Krieger on TV and her recipes always looks so good and good-for-you. So I really looked forward to this cookbook. But it was disappointing. Nothing really new or exciting. I don't think that I was inspired to make one of the recipes. Everything seemed somewhat insipid and boring. Oh, well.

  • Laura

Nothing earth-shattering, though the recipes I tried were tasty. While I enjoy her food (and applaud her mission), her recipes tend to have a lot of ingredients and several steps. I did like that she included most nutrition information, but think that she could streamline things a bit.

  • C

I keep borrowing this from the library and I have trouble making myself take it back.
The wings recipe alone is fantastic - so happy to have wings again that are the perfect mix of juicy and crispy without deep frying!

  • Phyllis

Many members of our cookbook club enjoyed what they made, so there are definitely done keepers in this book. The stuffed pork chop recipe on p. 157 is really delicious, but I found myself a little uninspired to make some of these items.

  • Kendra

The recipes looked good on paper, but the first two I tried -- Spicy Chicken Fried Rice with Peanuts and Broccoli-Cheddar Soup -- were so bland that I took the book back to the library. Comfort food doesn't have to be boring! Nice pictures, though.

  • Sydna

Love the way she has updated classic comfort food. Several recipes on my list to try but the cranberry pumpkin bread is fabulous! Great flavor .

  • Trish

This is a pretty good cookbook. I just wish there was more pictures.

  • Jec

some good recipes but i wish there would have been more pictures....it always helps to see what you are about to dive into....

  • Vanessa

I really like that Ellie isn't too extreme. She doesn't try to cut out all the fat and sugar, and she uses a combination of white and wheat flour in her recipes.

  • Cheryl

Love this book! So far I've made the peanut butter cookies the chicken pot pie and the stuffed cabbage...which was better than my moms shhhhhh! I may try every recipe in this book!

  • Heather Fineisen

    now for the execution...

  • Nancy

Probably 3.5 stars. Lots of things that look quick, tasty, simple, and relatively healthy. Just nothing that my screams "make me now!"

  • Erica Zulauf

I can't wait to make the Crispy French Toast fingers with Blueberry maple sauce, Pumpkin Bread with Cranberries, and Smoked Paprika Potato Chips.

  • Brindi Michele

Great grab for when I'm craving comfort food for my healthy lifestyle
