The Other Half (Serenity, #2.2) Reviews

    4 stars

    The Firefly/Serenity comic 'verse:

Serenity: Those Left Behind (Serenity, #1)

    Serenity: Better Days (Serenity, #2)

    Serenity: The Other Half

    Serenity: Float Out

    Serenity: Downtime

Serenity: Better Days and Other Stories

Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale (Serenity, #3)

    Serenity: It's Never Easy

Serenity: Leaves on the Wind (Serenity, #4)

8-page comic free to read on
    Darkhorse.com and reprinted in
Serenity: Better Days and Other Stories hardcover edition (2011). Even after all these years, I love revisiting the characters and stories of the Firefly 'verse -- it's like seeing old friends. And although short, this piece was true to the characters; it's like I could hear their voices in my head, bantering back and forth while getting shot at, just like old times. It's a good, quick read for any Browncoat!

Overall here is one problem. We don't actually ever get to find out what's going on with River so when she has her moments it's just expected or accepted... Not complaining about it I just feel like I wouldn't mind a more fleshed out explanation every once and awhile.

  • Norren

Just as perfect as the others in the Serenity series!

  • Ming Wei

    Enjoyed the short story

  • Luv

    Nice short

  • Graham Barrett

A Firefly "short story" set at some point before the movie Serenity about the crew being chased by Reavers while on the job. Entertaining enough but pretty much the same scene as the Reaver chase in the film with some of the details changed. Does its job though.

  • Johan Benjaminsson

A spiritual continuation of "Objects in Space" where Mal finally accepted River as a crew member.

  • Mitchell Friedman

A quick little River and Reavers tale. Doesn't add a whole lot to the mythos, maybe a hint. Not very deep but not bad. 3.5 of 5.

You really don't learn anything here.

I'm easy to please with my favorite fictional worlds. If you make the story pretty decent and feature the same characters I’ve fallen in love with, I’m almost guaranteed to enjoy it. Note that I said “almost.” Even for me it’s a stretch to call this “okay.” In the Other Half, the crew of Serenity are transporting an injured man for some Alliance client and end up getting attacked by Reavers. The story starts in medias res so there's no real clear indication on how exactly they got this job or where they are or where they're going (other than the assigned drop-off point) or even when this takes place. I can’t discuss the rest of this without spoiling the surprise at the end so SPOILERS.

Honestly, this was a pretty terrible story. I didn't buy Mal's reasoning, the story itself wasn't particularly interesting nor did it reveal anything different about the crew. Even the humor was half-assed at best. Oh and the art is nowhere near as good as the previous stories. It’s not one I'd recommend.

Definitely a step down in the art on these last three Serenity stories. But this one made up for it with creepy Reavers and an excellent ending.

    Awesome but short

A very short vignette of a comic. If you've only seen the show I believe this comic can stand alone since it doesn't yield too much random information.

  • Stacia

Very short (5 pages), but I enjoyed it.

  • Ryan

Very short but worth the search if you've got a few minutes.

  • Andrew Crouthamel

    The more Firefly the better.

  • Julie Gazca

Short read where Reavers once again rear their ugly, murderous heads! Love this world as I've said before, and I will not ever get enough of these!

  • Samantha wickedshizuku Tolleson

More Firefly? Who can complain about that? Wish this one could have been made into an episode of the show. It's an excellent plot.

  • Jim

A mini online short, enjoyable. Love em all.

  • Jamie

Enjoyable quick read that shows the gang doing what they do best. Includes a nice character moment with River and Mal at the end.

  • Janina

The Firefly crew's resident oddball shines in this short comic.
