Ugly Christmas Sweater Party Book: The Definitive Guide to Getting Your Ugly On Reviews

Had grabbed this at the library as a joke, just to flip through. Hysterical, quick, and now I really want to make an "Energizer Elf", but I like Red Bull and Vodka's anyway :-)

Brian Miller, Adam Paulson and Kevin Wool show off how to plan the Ultimate Ugly Sweater Party.
From food, drinks to games and contests, this book shows off the ugliest and hilarious sweaters ever.
Over 100 photos and a Hall-of-Fame of humorous tops make this a fun party-guide.

  • Amy

What a truly tacky waste of paper. Perhaps the idea of intentionally making holidays ugly is lost on me?

  • Leah Lambart

It was a fun book with good ideas for party planning. I'm not sure it needed to be a book as most of it could be found on the internet.

Miller, Paulson and Wool (better known as Team Ugly) maintain the website uglychristmassweaterparty.com which is a re-seller of Christmas sweaters - the gaudier and more covered with Christmas bling, the better. This book tells the reader how to organize an Ugly Christmas Sweater Party, including ideas on how to turn it into a charity event, special adult beverages, games, ideas for gift exchanges and decorations.

But, the bulk of the book is "The Ugly Christmas Hall of Fame." There are nearly 100 pages of pictures of Ugly Christmas Sweaters that are named and delightfully described with a snarky paragraph or two. This is really more of a holiday coffee table book than a serious read. This is something to pick up and read for a couple of minutes and then move on. But, those few minutes will be amusing, the pictures of those atrocious sweaters are high quality and you'll find yourself wondering if you should pick one of these things sweaters up for yourself.

About 1/3 of the book provides an overview of what needs to be done to host a successful ugly Xmas sweater party from planning to judging (and throws in a couple of drink and snack recipes for good measure).

The remainder of the book has photos of some just awful sweaters labeled with terrible puns (the best kind of pun, really) such as "Santa-tary Confinement" and some brief lines interpreting what's really going on in that article of clothing (hint: nothing good...).

A humorous, light holiday read with a few useful points in the planning segment.

In November, I ran my annual search on the Kalamazoo Public Library website seeking books to enjoy for the Christmas holiday. I reserved this one thinking it would have some photos to look at, and that would be funny. I was gravely mistaken. What a great party planning book! Suggestions for food, who to invite, and where to hold it. Great to plan most parties!

  • Sara

Great way to make money on a passing fad! But I LIKE ugly Christmas sweaters! It would be really fun to throw a party with this these, and they include food that coordinates with the ugly. This book has nothing to do with knitting the ugly sweaters, just the making fun of them!

  • Lisa Campbell

Pretty funny :-) got this to laugh at the ugly sweaters. Enjoying the humorous descriptions for each picture. "It seems that the snowman in the red sweater has taken the other two hostage at branch point".

  • Jessica

Very funny, though I do think that they are too hard on some of the sweaters.

  • Amber

Cute ideas and a fast read.

  • Ann

Love the ugly sweater pics... Good tips for hosting an ugly Christmas sweater party!
