Author’s note: This short story takes place right after the epilogue of “Zero at the Bone.” During that epilogue, Jack referred to a going-away party for a colleague that he had to attend, and D volunteered to accompany him to the party.

Shorty #1 to "Zero at the Bone" - the day after - 4 Stars
Only eight pages. A mingle party, thoughts from a six year old girl, dancing and sweet, sweet D (now Anson) and lovely Jack.
Sigh - I just love them!“Are you married?”
D flushed. “Uh...kinda, I guess. Might as well be.”
“My mom says boys can marry boys and girls can marry girls but some people don’t think they can.”
“What do you think?”
She shrugged, absorbed in her Lego metropolis. “Boys are icky, I wouldn’t wanna marry one. But that’s just me,” she said.

"What you mean, go with?"
Ellen rolled her eyes theatrically. "You know. Like Mommy goes with Daddy. And uh...like cereal goes with milk. You know."
D smirked. "Oh. Yeah, I s'pose I do."

Ellen giggled. “Yeah! But Uncle Jack is nice. He’s not as icky. He smells good and he doesn’t pick his nose.”
“Two of his better qualities, yeah.”
“So it’s okay if you wanna marry him, I guess.”
“Well, I appreciate the support.” -
Nice story, but if I was Jack, I would want my boyfriend to try more. D doesn't even try. He decides he doesn't like people and that's it.

This free short follows on directly after 'Zero at the Bone'. D tries his best this time around to turn up with Jack at a party in an attempt to socialise with Jack's friends. The story is more focused on D as he interacts with a kid. The dialogue is sweet and entertaining, and we get to see the side of D which we have not before on how he interacts with children.
A good read if you love D, like I do. -

A short story about Jack and D, who picks up right after the first book and i was surprised and IMPRESSED how well was written and how much the author put into 11 pages. WOW. This is AMAZING. -

What a great, but sadly only 8 pages long short story which follows Zero at the Bone.
Jack and D feel like such real people to me. It’s like all I can think of right now is Jack and D and I want more. I absolutely want more. I love to see how good their relationship is, how real and honest. It is a healthy relationship, even with all the problems they still have. They talk about things, they discuss things, and they support each other although this could mean that they can’t be together all the time because of their jobs. I love how they treat each other with such passion and love; I love how much they trust each other; love each other. I just love both of them so much and I really enjoyed this short story about Jack, taking D out to a goodbye party of one of his colleagues. Imagining D at one of those parties was kind of weird though but it was so much fun to read about how much he was doing this for Jack because he just loves him so much.
And then of course there’s still Jack. What a likeable and fabulous character he is. How can anybody not like, even adore him? He’s so good with people, always so optimistic and upbeat; he’s such a supportive and loving person and he has this good and happy effect on D which is so freaking endearing and cute and sweet and all of this together.
I love how D is actually a really tough guy but for Jack he becomes a cute little puppy every time. He says all those nice things to him, treats him like the most precious thing on this planet – it is the cutest thing and so was this short story.
The best part definitely was when D (now Anson) hid in Ellen’s room and played Lego with her. This was hands down one of the cutest thing’s I’ve ever read. Using Ellen to get D to talk about love, tolerance, acceptance and understanding was so very well done. Kids always tell the truth right? I loved how D behaved and acted around little Ellen.

I also love Jane Sevilles humour, I swear I was reading this while at the gym on the treadmill and I laughed so hard this one time, everyone kept staring at me for the rest of my time being on that treadmill but I didn’t care though I even almost fell off that thing but it was just soo good and so funny and I just couldn’t stop reading.

Damn that Jack; he really does ruin everything. (90% of the way through a very short 8 page story) and I was thinking: cute, sweet, 4 stars, look at D. coming even further out of his shell, Jack isn't so much of an ass when he's just having fun and not being a moralizing, holier than thou prick...and then BOOM! D's ever so sweet awkward proposal, which Jack by the way brings up and introduces into the conversation because D was talking to his little 6 year old friend, NOT Jack. Then after Jack brings it up, his (in my opinion) totally in character shitty response. I hate that man! -

Yes, of course I had to go read MORE of Jack and D!!! This story did not disappoint. It was short but it did start where the other ended so in that respect it just seemed a continuation and not really a snippet. I'm glad she added this for the readers to indulge their need for more :)

Very sweet. Seville is so good. I felt all the awkwardness that D felt, and how much he was doing this for Jack and how much they love each other. This was a nice little story.

I love it when authors are generous and write extra material.
I fell into D and J life and felt I need more.
This chapter was nice enough. Showed us D learning to adapt. D thinking of marrying J and of course learning how to show more emotions.
My heart just squeezed so hard when the crime was being described. OMG these stuff happen and it's so horrible.
I am looking forward to reading more stuff from this series. -
I read this last, even though it was meant to be the first spin-off of Zero at the Bone.
And you know what? It was nice to do it this way because now I have the feeling that they're doing fine instead of worrying about D and his work overseas.
I just love them so much.
And I really liked how D talked got the little girl. And how funny and honest she was.
I just... I wish we could have more of Jack and D. It is too damn short! -

Jack and D are one of my all time fave romantic couples. They are opposite in every way but they fit together perfectly. When D agrees to accompany Jack to a party it’s obvious he feels out of his element but he agrees to it for one reason, he loves Jack. And that’s enough. Be still my heart.

Not much to it but it's cool to see a glimpse into their everyday, more mundane life.
A little surprised that this author couldn't write a convincing child. Six-year-olds don't talk like that. That was a bit annoying.
D is really sweet, as usual.
Jack is adequate. -
