    Growing up in the South I always wondered why my family was so different from those around us. We were friendly with the people in our community but when serious discussions came up my parents grew quiet. Our friends and neighbors had no such reservations. They were opinionated and always eager for a fight of any kind whether with fists or words. We lived side and by side and spoke the same language but I always got the sense that we were just not ‘one of them.’

    My family was never really gung-ho when it came to discussions about the Confederacy or flying the flag. They were proud of being southern but it seemed to stop there. They were Republicans back in the days when everyone else was a Democrat. We just did not ‘fit’.
    Doing family history I learned that my mother’s people were New England Quakers who gradually made their way into the south. My father’s people lived in the North Carolina Highlands where they intermarried with the Cherokee. This was all very interesting but I honestly thought it was all ancient history until I read this book American Nations.

    A light suddenly came on in my head. My mother’s people came out of Yankeedom! My father’s people were those Borderlanders who lived in Appalachia and remained loyal to the Union because they hated the southern planters of the Tidewater and the ‘fake’ aristocracy they believed they wished to bring to America.

    If this sounds like some kind of secret code rest assured it is not. Colin Woodard has outlined a theory as to why America is so divided along cultural and political lines. It all goes back to the very beginnings of this country where politics and culture were determined by who settled where and what their dreams were.

    All of the different groups brought positives and negatives with them when they decided to settle here. Some wished to recreate the old world in a new setting, such as the younger sons of the British aristocracy who settled in the Tidewater and the Deep South. Some, like the Puritans and Pilgrims of New England, wanted a brand new utopia, a city on the hill in Yankeedom. The German settlers of the Midlands wanted nothing more than to farm and raise their families in a place free of restrictions and restraint. In New Amsterdam, the Dutch opted for a multi-cultural commerce center that became New York City. The Scots-Irish came here because they could. They were the tough ones, not afraid of a good fight who settled the wilderness and formed a civilization without a government in Appalachia.

    Even today living in this area which was settled by all of these groups you can see faint reminders of these earlier cultures all around us. Is it too fantastical to think that sitting down with a varied group of residents we could find out just by listening to the tone of their conversation who their ancestors were? I believe it is possible.

    The book answered so many questions. Why was integration so much harder to implement in the Deep South? Why are the states of the Pacific Northwest in the ‘blue’ category? Why did the Scots-Irish not side with the rest of the south until AFTER the Civil War?

    The negatives of each group are also highlighted. Yankeedom brought the concept of the town hall meeting and democracy but they were also religiously intolerant. New Netherlands gave us slavery which was taken advantage of in the Tidewater and Deep South. The Scots-Irish were the Marines of their day. They were the first to fight and never backed down from a challenge. Unfortunately, this tenacity could also translate into just plain old hard headiness which caused many a roadblock politically and socially.

    The role of religion in each ‘nation’ is discussed in detail. He includes similar developments in Canada which are valuable information for serious students of this school of thought. He gives several chapters to the earlier Spanish explorations, the French settling of the Gulf Coast and to later immigrant arrivals. Who settled where and why in the American West is given equal time which was information I used to just skim over.

    I would, however, caution the reader that Woodard can seem to come across in the later chapters as caustic toward certain regions and certain ideals. If you are of Scots-Irish descent you might want to take him to task for this and I fully expect you will but otherwise, it is an interesting and fascinating read for all of those out there wondering ‘Why are we the way we are and how did we come to this? Will we ever truly be a ‘United’ nation?

    The good first: I buy the premise of this book, that the U.S. is made up of rival nations with borders vastly different from the regions depicted on common maps of the country. And I enjoyed the parts that seek to illustrate the founding and spreading of U.S. colonies and what later became U.S. territory.

    When Woodard tries to characterize the people of the land, however, he brushes with broad, unflattering strokes that I found hard to take seriously. His discussion concerns missionaries, slave lords, congressmen, etc.; yet he casually refers to “Midlanders” or “Yankees” as though he has provided any insight whatsoever to the women, minority residents, or political moderates of that region.

    Woodard’s personal prejudices are made most evident by the facts and events he chooses to discuss, and the ones he ignores. He laments the railway land grants in the Far West, but handily excludes of any thoughtful consideration of New Netherlands/Yankee ownership of these railroad companies. He obviously lambasts the Deep South for its commitment to slavery, but obscures New England’s history of violent relations with Native Americans. Other events are presented in contentious and sometimes bizarre ways: Reconstruction in the South, for example, is described as a benevolent, peaceful outpouring of New English charity.

    I expected from this book a thoughtful consideration of the areas that don’t quite fit the regions we’ve often assigned them to: Woodard’s El Norte, Tidewater and parts of Appalachia, for example. And the book’s discussion of these areas is rewarding at times. But in the long run, his re-drawing of the U.S. map is just a qualification for his broad-stroke stereotyping of the people in those regions. What could have been a good synthesis of the acquisition and founding of U.S. territory devolves into something flat and unconvincing – often annoying.

    The writing is accessible but lazy, with inconsistent parentheses, recycled chapter openings, and formulaic sentence structures. There are un-cited quotes, and phrases put in gimmicky quotations for no apparent reason other than that the author doesn’t want to take responsibility for them.

    Two stars is generous, but it’s a cool map.

    Colin Woodard's American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America is an intriguing look at how the United States was formed and continues to be shaped by cultural differences. These differences can be, at least partly, attributable to which groups settled where, thus the 11 rival regional cultures Woodard espouses, as well as their divergent attitudes on concepts like liberty and equality. These differences are shown as playing a significant role from colonial times through the beginning of the 21st century. Something that was a little out of the box was Woodard's inclusion of regional cultures like El Norte and Canadian New France that have shaped peoples on both sides at what became the U.S. border. This was an easy read that was informative and engaging. 3.75 stars

    I don't care how much American history you know, or think you know, this book, awkwardly sub-titled “A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures,” is a revelation. I'll give you an example of my own -- where is the oldest building made by Europeans in the U.S? If you grew up in the Northeast, you're probably thinking it’s in Boston or Philadelphia. Went to school in the Southeast, maybe it’s in St. Augustine or New Orleans. So where you grew up has a lot to do with what you think you know. Don’t believe me? Then why isn’t The Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe, New Mexico, built ten years before the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock, the first place that pops to mind? Why isn’t it as famous as Plymouth Rock? Time and time again, this book reveals how our cultural roots from centuries ago still shape our worldview. It is why politics in Oregon, with towns named after the places its early European settlers came from like Portland and Salem, has more in common with New England than it does with the Midwest or California. Proof that Faulkner was right, "The past isn't dead. It's not even past."

    Journalist and amateur historian Colin Woodard makes a lot of interesting assertions on the back of thin evidence. Splitting North America into eleven competing “nations,” or more accurately, cultural archetypes, Woodard goes to great lengths to explain the history of the United States, not as a single hegemonic unit, but as many smaller, competing units within a federal framework.
    Woodard himself explains his work as a synthesis, and looking through the footnotes of American Nations, one wonders at the paucity of original sources, or at the scarcity of secondary sources. Woodard puts forth broad claims about the American history or regional characteristics on the strength of few sources, to wit: McCullough’s John Adams as the primary resource on the Adams presidency. In all, Woodard’s view of his pet regions remains terribly surface.
    Though his argument is engagingly presented, Woodard’s pessimistic impression, not only about the current state of inter-regional solidarity, but about the entire history of inter-regional solidarity, lends itself to Woodard’s worldview and worse, his surface-only approach to North American history. The primary drive behind the book emerges in the final two chapters, where Woodard engages in straight-faced left wing sloganeering, engineering the villainy of the Deep South against the social progressive good guys in so-called “Yankeedom.” Despite the shifting regional alliances from colonization to today mapped throughout the book, Woodard insists that the primary cultural movers retain the traditional North-South focus despite his earlier explanation that such a cultural axis possessed more complexity than he later shows. In Woodard’s estimation, all other regional groups are basically vassal-states, one way or another, to this cultural axis.
    In the end, Woodard’s view of regionalism, complete with names too cutesy to take seriously, presents interesting ideas, and a new way of interpreting old history, but cannot carry the freight necessary to make a compelling argument from the sources. When Woodard begins to fantasize about a United States without the former Confederacy as a socialist paradise more like Canada or Europe, he loses the thread of his own argument entirely and drifts into irrelevance. Woodard ought to try his hand at Alternate History, and leave this rank fantasy behind.

    Jon Stewart can’t do it all alone. The Daily Show has evolved toward more open-minded consideration of the issues of the day and less outright comedy because Stewart still thinks honest people of good faith can cut through the nonsense and figure out problems in a way any reasonable person can admit makes sense. Colin Woodard’s American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America pulls off the unlikely feat of both offering the tools for just such a broader, deeper understanding—and demonstrates why, in a larger sense, that effort is doomed.

    Many readers will be skeptical at first, and I was, too. No doubt Thomas Frank (What’s the Matter With Kansas?: How Conservatives Won the Heart of America) and others have done valuable work in looking deeper than the familiar red state/blue state divide to try to explain why people in different regions think and vote the way they do. But come on! Eleven nations? And right there in the map on the cover of Woodard’s book, we can see that the bottom half of Florida has simply been ignored, included in no “nation,” left uncolored as if by a kindergartner who got called to recess before he or she could finish drawing.

    In fact Woodard pulls it off. He compellingly lays out his vision of why it makes sense to throw state boundaries out the window for the most part and think instead of 11 nations, each defined by its history, by a common culture and set of assumptions about government and life. I always hated the term “Left Coast,” the way any self-respecting San Franciscan hates the term “Frisco,” since it seemed to carry the hint that even someone like me, fourth-generation Californian on both sides, was somehow not part of America. Yes, Woodard explains, that is exactly right: “Left Coast” culture, running in a coastal strip from around just north of San Luis Obispo, California, up to British Columbia, does in key respects stand apart from “the Far West,” “El Norte,” “First Nation,” “New France,” “the Midlands,” “Greater Appalachia,” “the Deep South,” “Tidewater,” “the New Netherlands,” and “Yankeedom.”

    “America’s most essential and abiding divisions are not between red states and blue states, conservatives and liberals, capital and labor, blacks and whites, the faithful and the secular,” Woodard writes in his introduction. “Rather, our divisions stem from this fact: the United States is a federation comprised of the whole or part of 11 regional nations, some of which truly do not see eye to eye with one another … Few have shown any indication that they are melting into some sort of unified American culture. On the contrary, since 1960 the fault lines between these nations have been growing wider, fueling culture wars, constitutional struggles, and ever more frequent pleas for unity.”

    The key to the book’s effectiveness is Woodard’s skill—and irreverence—in delving into history with no qualms about being both brisk and contrarian. New Yorkers, for example, are not always going to feel great stirrings of pride in reading about the history of New Amsterdam, especially the period shortly before the Civil War when residents of Manhattan were far from the forefront of anti-slavery. Yankees come off the worst, though, as important as they have been to U.S. history, and Woodard seems particularly aghast at their eagerness to claim the U.S. narrative as their own. He takes glee in pointing out that rebellion in the North American colonies against the rule of a distant king started not in the 1770s, but in the 1680s, and not “as a united force of Americans eager to create a new nation, but in a series of separate rebellions, each seeking to preserve a distinct regional culture, political system, and religious tradition threatened by the distant seat of empire.”

    Rather than playing around with his concepts, Woodard focuses most of the book on giving the history of each of his 11 nations; we’re more than 250 pages in by the time he finishes off the “Founding the Far West” chapter. What could have been an entire book-length riff of its own, “The Struggle for Power,” gets squeezed into two short chapters near the end, in which Woodard explains how the balance of power in the U.S. has shifted based on how swing nations align themselves—either with the northern alliance of Yankeedom, the New Netherlands and the Left Coast or with the Dixie alliance, the Deep South and Greater Appalachia joined by the “junior partner” Tidewater. The better we understand the orientation of each of the nations, the better we can grasp the way individual politicians have set about cobbling together support.

    “George W. Bush may have been the son of a Yankee president and raised in far western Texas, but he was a creature of east Texas, where he lived, built his political career, found God, and cultivated his business interests and political alliances,” he writes. “His domestic policy priorities as president were those of the Deep Southern oligarchy; cut taxes for the wealthy, privatize Social Security, deregulate energy markets… Meanwhile, Bush garnered support among ordinary Dixie residents by advertising his fundamentalist Christian beliefs, banning stem-cell research and late-term abortions, and attempting to transfer government welfare programs to religious institutions.”

    I’d have preferred to see more application of the ideas to contemporary politics, but maybe that will have to wait for the next book. In the meantime, American Nations may not leave much room for optimism about our dysfunctional political dynamic improving any time soon, but in offering us a way to better understand the forces at play in the rumpus room of current American politics, Colin Woodard has scored a true triumph. I am going to order copies for my father and sister immediately—and I hope Woodard gets a wide hearing for this fascinating study.

    I give this book 4 stars because his underlying observation is so cogent, so obvious, and so explanatory. Just wonderful. Anybody who sees and describes the reality that makes up the American nations deserves all the accolades we can throw at him. At the same time, the author's leftism leads him to say some inexcusably silly things, particularly near the end of the book. Those parts pulled down one and two stars. One gets the feeling that some of what is driving this analysis is identity politics, and it is clear that there are some identities that Woodard doesn't like very much -- here' s looking at you, Southerners and Borderlanders.

    It was educational seeing how the various regions of the United States historically coalesced, influenced by features such as the characteristics, histories, economies and interests of their early inhabitants. However, it was also pretty disheartening. After having read both this book and “Caste” by Isabel Wilkerson I am even more pessimistic than I was about the possibility for any real progress - social, environmental, economic or otherwise. It seems like we are encased in granite and everything we do, think and believe is preordained. The book gave many examples of the complete predictability of how we vote and our position on issues, based on where we live. With large swaths of the country long ing for the America of 1850, it is hard not to see the United States as an experiment on the brink of failure. It certainly isn’t living up to its idealized image as an enlightened democratic society. As the author wrote (in 2011, not 2020): “We won’t hold together if presidents appoint political ideologues to the Justice Department or the Supreme Court of the United States. Or if party loyalists try to win elections by trying to stop people from voting rather than winning them over with their ideas.”

    I am very enthusiastic about this 2011 book and would recommend it heartily, even to people who might not, themselves, be inclined to give it five stars. Colin Woodard assigns all of North America to one of eleven regions, as opposed to Joel Garreau's NINE NATIONS (OF NORTH AMERICA) back in 1981. In so doing, Woodard ignored the southern tip of Florida but added four brand-new regions: "New Netherland" (Greater New York) and a tri-sected South that replaced a unified Confederacy with "Tidewater," "Greater Appalachia," and the Cotton-Belt "Deep South."

    Personally, for all its cultural vibrancy, I had trouble with the author's denominating Greater New York its own "New Netherland," but Woodard does make the salient point that the original settlers of a region are usually able to put their own stamp on it, even if they have since dwindled significantly in numbers -- only about a third of one percent of modern Greater New Yorkers have actual Dutch forebears. There is far less of a tendency here than in Garreau's 1981 book to make regions into monoliths, which opens up our understanding that New Jersey is really divided into two warring factions: the northern part, allied with NY/NY, and the Philiadelphia-centric southern half.

    For that matter, a "multinational" South is a great help in understanding the history and culture of the Southeastern U.S.A. In Woodard's reckoning, Virginia is about evenly divided between its Tidewater and Appalachian components, and they hate each other very much: the Tidewater component is pseudo-Aristocratic and more genteel, while the Appalachian western half of the state is more roughhouse, Scots-Irish, and lends itself to a variety of derogatory nicknames, of which "Redneck" is one of the milder. Typically, the isolated Appalachian component resists going to war until a war has begun; then its citizens turn out in force.     While Garreau's earlier book has its strong points and its similarities (observe how closely his "Ecotopia" parallels Woodard's "Left Coast"), the more historic point of view afforded by AMERICAN NATIONS is highly instructive indeed. Instead of the hackneyed schoolbook view of an America that slowly inched toward civil war and finally gave way, in 1861, we are given to understand just how often these various nations have been at each others' throats for the past 400 years. Similarly, the American turf has been rife with secessionist and liberationist movements: for every successful one, like West Virginia, there have been any number of enthusiastic failures like Freedonia, Franklin, Deseret, and the Western Reserve.

    Again -- AMERICAN NATIONS is not for everyone but it is informative, thought-provoking and well-written. Older concepts like "Border South" or "Rustbelt" seem irrelevant compared to the analysis in this book.

    So. Er. That's concerning. Also, I feel seen.

    This book was written in 2010-ish, and it's enlightening, edifying, and full of bits of American history of which I was previously unaware, or details that I definitely didn't learn in high school history class. (Such as Alexander Hamilton's role in provoking the Whiskey Rebellion by facilitating the disenfranchisement of rural people holding federal debt, and then taxing the whiskey they used as currency payable in hard coin, oops.)

    Anyway, I highly recommend this one. I previously read Woodard's REPUBLIC OF PIRATES, which is also excellent but gets bogged down in the end. This comes to a much tighter conclusion. If I could give this one six stars, I would.

    My problem with broad-stroke history books is that they are far too broad, and that you cannot really make claims or assertions because there simply isn’t enough evidence provided to back them up. Ultimately this is the greatest weakness of Woodard’s book. It’s a very interesting premise, and one that I largely find to be true and intuitive if you travel and live in different places in this country. I grew up in Nebraska, and found my time in North Carolina to be an interesting study, mostly in what “self-reliance” meant to different people, because it’s everything to the individual in my Germanic-Midwestern upbringing, but had a more communal definition in the south. It’s just that there wasn’t enough evidence provided behind each separate American nation mentioned in the book to make a very strong argument. I certainly think he COULD make a strong argument, but then this would have needed to be a series a books. In a series of books there could have been a greater look at how the importation of various slave nations changed the language and cultures in Tidewater and the Deep South, and how they changed them differently. There could have been a greater look at how these various cultures freed or repressed women and other minorities. But it was a broad-stroke book, and there was just no time for details.

    Still, it’s probably a good, and important book for people to read that don’t delve a lot into history. It covers a good chunk of time, does spend at least some time looking at the treatment of the majority and the minority in each culture, and will make a lot of things on the news make sense. Like, why can’t we just all get along? Short answer- because we never have, and we probably never will. It clips along at a pretty decent pace, so if you aren’t an avid history reader (which is totally fine, btw, I don’t ever ready mysteries myself) then this won’t bore you, and will be a decent outline.

    In particular I would have loved a much greater section on the newly growing but always present First Nation, particularly in Canada and other countries. We could learn so much by increasing the inclusivity of native people’s into our governments. I would have also loved to read more particularly about the El Norte power struggle. Alas, like with so many books, I have found new and interesting information and just want to go further into the rabbit hole.

    3.5 out of 5, rounding down to 3 because it doesn’t really belong in the 4’s with some of my favorite microcosm histories, but maybe you can just chalk that up to tastes. If Woodard wrote more about his theory, I would certainly continue to read about it, because I do think he has mostly hit the nail on the head as far as the larger culture goes. I would also love to read more about subcultures in those broader strokes.

    I can't recommend this book highly enough. It explains why the different territories of the country have the different political bents that they do. And I learned facts about American history that I had never previously heard. The ending gets a little too biased and subjective, but up until then it's fascinating.

    Historically this is excellent. And the groupings/ regional cultures fairly accurate by name and value cores for their political stances. Yet, he analyzed the entire (not just one or two but nearly all the main 6 to 8 groups) through slanted "eyes" toward their progressions, IMHO. The more modern he approaches in placements to 2011 (when this was printed)- the more crooked the "truth" gets. Because he uses language and measurements that are chuck filled with his Maine end bias.

    The historical is real but also omits, especially in monetary controls of "other" groupings. Yet it's descriptive to criteria value fall outs for the original conditions and populations. So little copy that is written in the 21st century holds what is classified as History - that actually IS history. This comes close to history as it occurred. All the past formations and migrations being accurate. Although I'm fairly sure there are omissions there, as well.

    With tech instant knowledge for "manners" cores and huge movement of populations for jobs and/or better weather/ living conditions as they garnered enough $$$ / resources to do so? Because of that alone- I find that his "certain" assumptions of future parsing are not particularly spot on. Not at all. All told his brush strokes are just miles too broad.

    It is true that what is core IMPORTANT to some Americans is at least 7 or 8 places down the list for others. And that work ethic tied to fulfillment, manners of respect, religious belief, and other family tied criteria are not at all equal within various American populations. But at the same time, I don't see the future playing out as he does at all. He's truly prejudiced for at least 4 other groupings in a quite condescending and "knowing better" way, and thus seeing only what his own "eyes" extrapolate from that "knowing". There's more there than that there. Some of it is also HUGE. Food supply being only the tip of the iceberg. And urban vast inability to practical applications of human survival techniques and mechanical skills being another.

    He also doesn't equate tolerance as a developed skill that can not be taught but must be role modeled. Another very prime important nail in the structure that is cyclical. We are presently into a bottom of the barrel "elite know better" that judges every "other" opinion as not different but BAD. Which is the opposite of tolerance, free speech and the core of being American. And the "one" America will surmount that nasty Elite superiority complex in an American population dominance reaction over time. It's a cycle that has occurred before and will again. Americans have and hold in nearly every and all of these groups a native toxicity to this current mean judgments and top down dictates all told. They will- because so many of their descendant lines (and habits of doing/thinking) have come from fleeing from it.

    We are not One in America. But nothing and nowhere is ONE- there are too many people and opinions for there ever to be ONE entity country anywhere. Not even the Vatican.

    Woodard's effort to rethink North American demographics is a disappointment. And it's really not his own model, either: the Eleven-nation concept is entirely derivative of Garreau's "Nine Nations" of the '80s and Fischer's "Albion's Seed" of the 90s. I suppose the model can help to explain some of North America's history, but it doesn't apply well to the modern world. And it doesn't help that Woodard seems obsessed with breaking up the US, Canada and Mexico with especial emphasis on new states on the Rio Grande and in Quebec, and that's he's pathetically consumed with hatred for the South. So what are the main problems? First, no one really thinks in terms of these nations. Nations need to have deep rooted identity with their populations---no one has ever thought of themself as a "Greater Appalachian" or "Tidewaterite". Second, mass culture and relocations have radically transformed the older settlement patterns. The Sun Belt is full of presumptive ex-Yankees, yet Woodard pretends these newcomers, somehow, go native--immediately. Third, and especially if one thinks in terms of "Blue" and "Red", cities regardless of "nationhood" are more alike than not, as is true for exurban areas. Look at county voting maps and try puzzling out some of these "nations." And fourth, Woodard contorts mightily to deny the amazing unifying power of the American (and Canadian) federal systems. At their core, most people are enthusiastic about their citizenship and are arguably not grimly at war with people in other states, provinces or sections. The Spirit of '76, I think is still with most of us south of the border. In the end, this one is a thought exercise, but it is by no means a satisfactory explanatory tool, nor an edifying vision for the future. And we need more that brings us together, not something that tries its darndest to split us apart.

    Our country finally makes sense. The facts haven't changed, and even the history we were taught in high school and college retains its basic outlines. But why we are the way we are, with all the frustrations we suffer because of our politics, our religions, our battling/baffling cultural wars: now I begin to understand.

    Of course we all knew that the parts of North America were settled by people with different - wildly different, as it turns out - origins. But because American history as it's usually taught so heavily emphasizes what began with the Mayflower, all the other beginners are dismissed as outliers. What Colin Woodard does is begin with _all_ the founding groups, taking them at their face value. Each group - he names them Yankeedom, Midlands, Deep South, El Norte, Greater Appalachia, New France, The Far West, The Left Coast, New Netherland, Tidewater, and First Nation - bore cultural expectations and political/cultural desires, with (in most cases) an expectation of hegemony and control. As the Nations expanded, they clashed. Those clashes shine in today's political world, and they are likely to continue as long as North America is populated, for the nations do not blend easily.

    My own family comes mostly from Yankeedom, which probably explains why I wrote my doctoral dissertation on John Milton. But I have lived in Midlands, Tidewater, El Norte, and Deep South. This book helps explain what I experienced.

    Woodard pulls you quickly into his story, and each of his Nations becomes a character fighting its way into the future. He makes you understand their strengths and, especially, their failings. You will be captivated by his story, written with such skill that you may find it hard to put down.

    Most of us, when we hear the words “United States”, likely make an immediate mental reference to the 50 states which form the Union, and this of course is by definition correct. Author Colin Woodard, in his fascinating book “American Nations”, presents a remarkably different and compelling viewpoint: that America as we know it is actually comprised of eleven different “nations”, each having its own unique historical, cultural and political features and views. Further, these “nations” are actually geographic regions that have formed over many years, having little to do with actual state boundaries.

    Woodard has given these eleven regions some colorfully descriptive names, and you will enjoy the adventure of coming to understand and locate each of them. They are, in no particular order: El Norte, First Nation, New France, the Midlands, the Left Coast, the Far West, Yankeedom, the Deep South, Greater Appalachia (the Borderlanders), New Netherlands, and Tidewater.

    For example, I have always lived in the Deep South, but have some relatives from the Midlands, and Yankeedom, and many from Greater Appalachia. I learned a great deal, from the centuries of their history recounted in this book, about how and why these areas came to exist, and how their very particular cultural, religious, and political views made them each very distinct and different. This book was an easy read and a fun learning experience, highly recommended!

    Reading the reviews of this book on goodreads I am struck by how little people know about American history, and that is, the American continent, not the false association of America as the United States. The fact is that the thesis presented in American Nations is not really a very innovative concept, but more of a nuanced one. The melting pot versus salad bowl concept has been around for going on generations now. The historian David Hendrickson just a few years ago put out a book, Peace Pact, with the thesis that during the revolution each of the 13 colonies acted like individual nation-states and provided some speculation as to what would have happened if federalism had failed producing a Europe of the west. The author himself provides a few inspirational jumping points along the way of this notion. Quite frankly, this model of American history should be all but apparent and is clearly compelling, evident by the numerous testimonials amongst the reviews from a seemingly diverse group of readers.

    Woodard in this analysis of American history provides a strongly reasoned, objective review of origins of the American continent. He brilliantly historicizes the cultural origins of each region of the country tracing them from creation to the eventual presiding of the dominant culture then analyzes the tensions and bonds created amongst these regions. Having spent time or lived in almost all of these regions (except those of the Canadian northeast), these contrasts are woefully apparent. The majority of my time was spent in the Deep South, and his characterization of this bastion of authoritarianism and anti-equality is spot-on. I am struck by Woodard's ability to objectively view both historical and contemporary culture with the exact same non-partisan eye, yet with the acute familiarity and sense of belonging to each of these cultures.

    At the end of the day, it is important to note with any sociological analysis, especially one rooted in historicity, that this is a model. Applying too much weight to this view of society is detrimental because this is not "how things are" but merely a way of deciphering the complexity of interpersonal and intersocial relations of the United States.

    Perhaps the greatest aspect of this analysis is the conclusion here. The purpose of this book is not just a new historical tradition in a vein attempt to gain notoriety or provide a pop historical trend, but the results of this analysis are prescriptive. Woodard cautions strongly that many of the conditions that got us into our current partisan landscape are not inevitabilities let alone unfixable. A strong need to understand all of our means of becoming the cultures we have grown up is necessary if we wish to work ourselves out of the contemporary social problems that we are immersed in. Ironically, it is none of the cultural traditions of Yankeeness or Southerness or even Westerness that he sees as the model for salvation of the American way of life. The saving grace of America is indigenous. If this continent is to stop the ever-increasing decline and even possible foreign exploitation slowly working its way into our institutions, we must adopt the sustainable and cooperative traditions of native Inuits. That alone is worthy of another volume.

    Enlightening, imperfect and potentially dangerous. Woodard creates a narrative of the US as several nations living side by side. The story is compelling enough to ring true in my experience. So many competing cultural values are articulately described as having roots in various waves of immigration. Unfortunately, it needs better citation and more evidence to be really mind blowing. He relies heavily on the work of David Hackett Fischer but is much more judgmental. The dangerous part is that it gets enough right that it feeds a sort of factionalism in me that never really existed before. Suddenly endless compromise on our politics seems less likely, even less desirable. Suddenly people I'd only thought of as American before start to look more alien than I'd realized. Deep South I'm looking at you.

    Forget the conventional North America map and take a look instead at the map on the cover of AMERICAN NATIONS...

    Yankeedom? New Netherland? the Midlands? Tidewater? Greater Appalachia? The Deep South? New France? El Norte? The Left Coast? the Far West? First Nation?? What kind of North American map is that??

    Well, even folks who think they don't know much about geography surely know plenty enough to do a double-take. And that's what happened to me. I saw that map and meant to keep walking, but something happened. I found myself doing an about face, one version of a double take, I suppose, and even though one hand was busy scratching my head, my other hand was heading toward that mostly red cover and before I knew it, I was skimming for an explanation of that map -- and before I knew it, I wanted to read the whole shebang.

    After all, not long ago, I had finished reading Russell Shorto's ISLAND AT THE CENTER OF THE WORLD: The Epic Story of Dutch Manhattan and the Forgotten Colony That Shaped America. Before long it became clear that the two books are "related."

    Shorto writes in detail about the colonial/settlement history of New Netherland, and New Netherland turns up as one of historian/author Colin Woodard's "eleven" American Nations. Not surprisingly, Woodard does more than acknowledge Shorto; Woodard states his agreement with Shorto's thesis that the early colonial history left a cultural stamp still evident in modern New York. Woodard, however, goes beyond New York/New Netherland, to the whole continent. He describes for readers the early colonial/settlement history of eleven North American places identified on the map of my double-take and asserts that the particular characteristics of those histories have lasted into the current era.

    Woodard has a dense, though readable, book with an introduction, epilogue, index, notes, and suggested readings. The main text is organized clearly in Four Parts:

    Part One:Origins 1590 to 1769 (Chapters 1-9);
    Part Two: Unlikely Allies: 1770 to 1815 (Chapters 10-14);
    Part Three: Wars for the West: 1816 to 1877 (Chapters 15- 21);
    Part Four: Culture Wars: 1878 to 2010 (Chapters 22-28)

    The experience and perspectives of a reader no doubt will influence the reaction to various sections of AMERICAN NATIONS. I myself was most interested when Woodard was presenting foundational settlement history and identifying each nation's values and characteristics, exhibited particularly memorably in Parts One and Two, and less well in some later parts of the book.

    In evaluating AMERICAN NATIONS, I think it is useful to remember that this book is very consciously a SYNTHESIS, as Woodard himself in the very first sentence on page 323 in the section titled: Acknowledgments and Suggested Reading states:

    "AMERICAN NATIONS is largely a work of synthesis and, as such, has many intellectual forebears, informants, and godparents."

    Individuals who have studied, learned, and read widely sometimes have aha moments and the skill to organize and write information that can distill information from separate sources and still illuminate a fresh perspective for the rest of us. Thank you for that, Mr. Woodard!

    I really give this book 3.5. The thesis is quite intriguing -- that America is actually composed of 11 (count 'em) different nations, and the outcome of domestic political events is the function of the interplay among these relatively distinct groups. Moreover Woodard posits that these 11 nations have persisted in their original orientation over time, in fact since the moment they arrived on the North American continent. To think about this notion, you might remember THE EUROPEANS by Luigi Barzini (1984), a marvelous book in which the author attempted with wit and insight to capture the essence of the separate European cultures as a guide to the future. True but not complete. Let us be happy that Colin Woodard is not a European. If he were, he might be telling us how certain it was that the European Union, much less the Euro, would be collapsing in failure. So the un-intriguing part of the book is Woodard's increasingly more difficult task as he proceeds through American history of shoehorning post-Independence America into his categories.

    In fairness, it's neat to read about the characteristics identified with each group (and they do sound plausible) and then think of people you've met from that region or background with precisely those identifiers. By the time you reach the end of the book, however, the real plot line is clear: Woodard cannot stand Bush 43, hates the Deep South, loves the notion that Native Americans had and have higher life values than any of the European "nations", and even supposes in one brief section that northern Mexico might want to secede and join the United States! This could be an unusual theory indeed, and began to cause this reader to wonder just how accurate his other judgments might have been.

    The one point of real disagreement, however, is more personal. History is not simply a function of trends with roots going back centuries. We do and must reinvent our futures in the present we are given if we intend to progress. For example, the European Union, for better and worse, is a courageous attempt to overcome history and move beyond a Europe of rivals to a Europe of common stakeholders. Time will tell whether it works. For the American South, since the end of the Civil Rights era, the region has outpaced the rest of the country in economic growth, and race relations have improved enormously. This is so not solely because African-Americans fought, sacrificed and bled for their proper place in American society, but because millions of Southern whites recognized the error in their history and were prepared to see it change for the better. I'm a little surprised Woodard wrote such a negative book three years after Barack Obama became president. I'm a bit disappointed that his enviable ability to turn a clever phrase overwhelmed his opportunity to capture a deeper truth -- the American will to reach perfection, no matter how distant.

    This is the sort of thesis that you might come up with at bar trivia night with your friends, and you get all excited and write it all down on napkins, and then in the morning when you sober up you look at your napkins and realize that this all falls apart way too quickly. It works as a brief thought exercise. I could see myself introducing this concept to an American History class during one early lecture, just to get people thinking about the various colonies and how they were settled, and how different they were when they sat down and tried to collaborate on a government. But moving beyond 1800, the theory gets messy fast.
    There is so much of American History that just doesn't play into this at all. Cities play basically no role in this narrative. Neither, really, do African Americans or Native Americans. Fundamentally, this is the same old tired East to West American History story, with Indians playing no role in events, just getting swept aside. There have been all sorts of books published in the last couple of decades that revise that narrative, but they aren't here. As the book progresses, the contradictions pile up and Woodard doesn't even really try to address them. How can Yankeedom be so weak in Atlantic Canada that they fail to rebel with their fellow Yankees, but then so strong that the Yankee culture of the Maritimes absorbs every subsequent arriving group? Woodard wants Lincoln to be a Yankee so badly that he is reduced to mentioning "mixed Yankee, Midland, and Appalachian ancestry." The guy was from Kentucky. The religious revivals of the 2nd Great Awakening that happened in New York State and Kentucky had a lot of similarities, but since the people involved were of two different "nations," they have to be different. That makes no sense. LBJ gets no credit for the civil rights bills! They have to be the work of a Yankee, so Woodard gives Kennedy credit and all LBJ did was follow a "blueprint." Ugh.
    Yeah, this book made me more and more irritated.

    This book starts as what appears to be a well researched look at how 11 different regions of the United States (nations, as the author calls them) have shaped the culture and politics of the United States. As the book progresses, it turns into something approaching a screed. At the end of the book, it’s clear that the author is a dyed in the wool citizen of Yankeedom and that in his opinion only Yankeedom and its progeny (according to his research) the Left Coast have it right. The real problem with the country is the autocratic elite of the Deep South that come across as the devil incarnate, with the libertarian welfare establishment (I didn’t make that up) of the Far West coming in at close second.

    It’s clear to the author that the various nations can never play together and therefore the US will end up like the past empires of the world, falling apart. He points out that this is not that farfetched; look at what just recently happened to the USSR.

    It’s interesting that in my copy, all of the reviews are from establishments and individuals that are primarily aligned with Yankeedom except for one. That one is from the News and Observer of Raleigh North Carolina that is quoted as describing the book as “provocative reading.”

    An incredible, paradigm-shifting cultural studies book, for my understanding personally. I considered giving it 5 stars, but generally reserve that rating for the spiritually-moving, like Zen and the Art and Life of Pi, and fiction of that ilk. Anyway, a re-orienting learning experience that changes the way one can contemplate American history and culture.

    Essentially, this is the story of 11 distinct cultures playing influential roles on each other and the geopolitical development of North America and particularly the United States. What makes this book fascinating is the way these cultures' vast differences in values and morals explain contemporary problems of cooperation in our nation. To get an insight into why so many of us hate Obamacare, its helps learning how much the Deep South or Appalachians resented, absolutely hated the federal government involvement, preferring to handle its community business and the well-being of its citizens by itself, thank you. The descriptions of these nations - Yankeedom, Tidewater, Greater Appalachia, the Deep South, the Midlands, the Left Coast, New France, New Amsterdam, FIrst Nation, and El Norte, and the Far West - provide an excellent explanation on why the hell we can't get along with other parts of the country - and probably never will. Woodard predicts either a splinter of the American Union and a significant change in the Canadian, Mexican and US boarders, unless American cultures can agree to make serious compromises in its views of government intervention, and crucial understandings of freedom and liberty.

    It's fascinating to learn and understand who founded what areas, what their intents were, what parts of Europe they came from, who they didn't get along with in the old country and here in the new continent and to what extend the federal government, various religious orders, public education and Native American populations influenced their new regional identities. You can see how Deep Southern aristocrats deeply resented the righteousness of New England pious congregations, how New Amsterdam-ers wanted to preserve equality, diversity and the right to free speech above all else, and how poor Quakers were at governing Pennsylvania. The most interesting culture reading about to me was Greater Appalachia. What would consider hillbillies today, these people loved to fight, and hated government intervention of any kind. Their bond to their family bonds was strong, but their relationship with their neighbors often shifted depending who pissed them off the most at a given time. These communities cared little for public education or personal salvation for the most part, but played an under-appreciated role in the federation's development, playing a major role in crafting early 19th-century American policy, producing a healthy number of Presidents, and supplying a disproportionate number of troops to serve in the Armed Forces. So while it's easy to criticize this population - this nation - as being ignorant, anti-government hillbillies, it's important to remember that their values or bold protection of freedoms and skepticism of government intervention played an important role in tempering the Yankees (New Englanders) at times oppressive righteousness and moral lecturing.

    At the beginning of the book, he identifies current political figures lamenting about the lack of unity in America, and the need to "re-unite to find our original common bond." This research shows we never were united, and we never will be, because our neighbors' moral values are often so different from ours, we never fought for the same purposes, and never shared common rewards other than national protection in international affairs. Most interesting to me were the re-evaluations of the American Revolution. I'm not going to try to attempt to summarize the reasons for entering the Revolution, because every student of history knows the general reasons why the colonies united to fight a distant monarch, and those traditionally-viewed reasons aren't altered greatly in Woodard's book. But what I find interesting are the individual fights each ethnic regions had with each other while we as a fresh nation fought a foreign invader. To believe the Yankees in the north were fighting the Revolutionary War for the same reasons as those in Tidewater or the Deep Southerners, or the Midlanders (Quakers originally - and terrible, awful municipal leaders) of Pennsylvania held the same opinion about fighting for independence and preserving liberty as the Scots-Irish of Appalachia, is to greatly misunderstand the development of the United States, and the origins of the different cultures that who settled the regions of this continent. We never thought the same way, didn't fight for the same things, and continue to essentially disagree rather than agree about key governing concepts. And we probably never will. Perhaps one day, our borders will more realistically reflect how different clusters of North Americans choose to live their lives.

    As revolutionary a read of American history as Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States", this book helped re-shape my understanding of American history right up to the 21st century, including motivations for regional developments, cultural wars, and military interventions. I highly recommend this book as an essential read for an expanded, enlightened insight into our multiple cultural identities, our constant arguing and splintered values, and a modern understanding of why we just can't agree with our fellow countrymen.

    The first 22 (of 28) chapters, or so, of this book are a very rich and engaging historical analysis of significant North American events, even if the author is overly general and un-nuanced in the descriptions of his various regional subcultures, and even if he slips into dogmatic political rants in a few brief spells. The most rewarding stretches of this book are the author's unpacking of complicated social-cultural-political backstories to North American colonization, the US Revolutionary War, the US Civil War and the Mexican-American War. However, the more Woodward tries to tie subcultural distinctions to the contemporary political scene, the more this book becomes a very shallow, dated and woefully orthodox leftist analysis. Any moderate or progressive who keeps up with modern events will likely find the author's bias annoying and the final stretches of this book a waste of time, even if his overall premise is mostly valid.

    Really interesting idea, but a really dry delivery. Woodward divides up the country into 11 different regions that have more or less maintained their cultural cohesion. It did make me wonder whether holding the union together has been worth the cost? I mean, that's sort of the unchallenged conventional wisdom, but maybe good fences would have made for less of a divided country? I don't think that's true, but reading this made me wonder for the first time.

    Woodard's "American Nations" begins with an intriguing premise, that the American nation we all know is really a federation of eleven differing socio-ethnic-regions, with the "driving force of American politics" not "primarily...a class struggle or tension between agrarian and commercial interests," but ultimately a "clash between shifting coalitions of ethno-regional nations, one invariably headed by the Deep South, the other by Yankeedom."

    With his premise established, Woodard first defines his nations:

    --Yankeedom: originally founded by Calvinists desiring an earthly Zion, these New Englanders secularized over-time, but kept a strong faith in federal government and social justice ("secular puritans").
    --New Netherlands: essentially greater New York City today, the New Netherland were the product of two Dutch innovations, tolerance of diversity, and unflinching commitment to free inquiry.
    --The Midlands: founded by English Quakers, this region is defined by pluralism, middle class values, and a wariness of too much government intrusion.
    --Tidewater: a fundamentally conservative region that has moderated over time, responsible for aristocratic "inflections in the Constitution" and anything that smacks of a Grecian conception of both republic and freedom.
    --Greater Appalachia: "Rough, bellicose settlers" of Scots-Irish descent, products of a warrior ethic, and proclaimers of anti-aristocratic values.
    --The Deep South: the "least democratic nation", a "bastion of white supremacy," and the general reason for the evils of the entire world (this last statement more of a personal paraphrase really).
    --New France: the most overtly nationalistic, yet also egalitarian, consensus-driven, and "the most liberal people on the continent" (a statement which I think would surprise much of deep-red Louisiana greatly).
    --El Norte: a hybrid between Anglo and Spanish America, the "Nortenos" are more independent, self-sufficient, and work-centered than their southern neighbors in central Mexico.
    --The Left Coast: a combination of Yankee faith in good government with a total commitment to "individual self exploration and discovery" (yes, that's a direct quote).
    --The Far West: the only region where climate overcame socio-ethnic practices. Heavily dependent on federal aid, this region has grown to resent both the federal government and the mega-corporations that run so much of its industry.
    --First Nation: the one Woodard really never talks about, encompassing "a vast region with a hostile climate...boreal forests, tundra, and glaciers." Really all you need to know about it, at least until Nation's final pages.

    This all makes for a fascinating read--and Woodard is an excellent writer. Indeed, that's part of the problem. Woodard makes so many claims, while citing such a paucity of primary (or even secondary) sources, that it's actually a very difficult endeavor to read this book. After awhile, I found myself constantly referring to the endnotes, after each 2-3 pages, just to see where Woodard was actually getting his data for some of his pithy, written philippics. But here were my general takes:

    1. Woodard's first two sections (Origins and Unlikely Allies) are easily his strongest. In the vein of Albion's Seed, Woodard examines how the patterns laid down by various European cultures meshed with geography to shape later regional development. The tone here is more measured, and in general, the claims less strident. There are still question marks (claiming New England puritanism as holding to a "Germanic" conception of individualism and personal freedom is definitely a trick, given how strongly collectivist their culture actually was), but generally, terms are defined and boundaries laid in such a way as to convincingly support the author's premise.

    2. Woodard's Nations contains quite a few historical statements that are misleading at best, inaccurate at worst--and in both cases, his endnotes do little to inspire much confidence. A few gems include:

    --The Bill of Rights was inspired by the treaty document "Articles of Capitulation on the Reduction of New Netherland." Absent are James Madison's role as author or any real discussion of Lockean theory.

    --New France engineered a society that was "among the most liberal on the continent." If by liberal one takes into account "liberal" New Orlean's segregation until 1960, and deeply-red Cajun country's growing support of conservative policies, and Quebec's strident nationalism and suppression of the English language--then sure.

    --Republicans were "champions in the fight against Civil Rights." Google will take care of this one really quick.

    --Woodard's coverage of southern Christianity lacks nuance and depth of source. His chapter Gods and Missions cites only one main work on the subject, Martin E. Marty's Righteous Empire (from 1970!!). Regardless of how you feel about Marty's interpretive paradigm or his larger Fundamentalism Project, there's no denying citing him as your only source will certainly lead to a more strident, perhaps less nuanced tone. I'm no partaker in Fundamentalism, but as a historian, I can appreciate the historical tonality and subtlety of respected writers like George Marsden in covering the subject. Marsden, to say the least, would not have allowed such harsh harangues as "irrational beliefs exposed as superstition" to leave his pen and describe his subject matter. Woodard does, often.

    3. Shifting historical tonalities/Dubious modern-regional descriptions (Northeast versus South): By far the weakest aspect of Woodard's Nations. Woodard's northeastern bias is inherently present from the beginning of Nations, and that's not too shocking considering the man wrote a virtual ode to the state of Maine in 2005's Lobster Coast (a work which runs almost 400 pages for one state--longer than Woodard's entire work on eleven "nations" here). Yet through the first two sections, Woodard at least attempts to ensconce that tonality within a historical narrative. But by the last section (Culture Wars: 1878-2010) all holds are off, and we're given simplistic partisan onslaughts like this little gem:

    "The northern sixties rebels (referring to the Yankee bloc) regarded big business as an oppressive force that despoiled the Earth and dehumanized the individual. By contrast, the nations of the Dixie bloc have continued to promulgate policies that ensure they remain low-wage resource colonies controlled by a one-party political system dedicated to serving the interests of the wealthy elite."

    The quote is enough to make one recoil, both for its blatantly polemic tone and its conspicuously lazy research. Setting aside the obvious reality that Walmart wages are Walmart wages regardless of the Mason-Dixon line, and that most of those "sixties rebels" went on to largely successful careers in said "big business,", Woodard utterly fails to take in a wide berth of easily-researchable, generation-long statistical trends, including the South's high net migration rates and under-10 age group explosion, along with two straight decades of economic growth above the national average, generally cheaper cost of living, higher real value of the dollar, and generally lower tax structures (

In short, in "new" southern cities ranging from Louisville to Greenville to Fort Smith to San Antonio, the South is open for both business and families, even as northeastern and left coast states continue to experience massive domestic migration losses (
    http://www.newgeography.com/content/0...). Yes, the south may have "low wages" comparative to the rest of the country, but that hardly matters when the value of your dollar in South Carolina goes so much further than in New York or California (

    A nuanced approach might have touched on a far more fascinating study - one highlighted by such noted political scientists as Sean Trende - the steady migration south of Northern businesses, and their subsequent effect on southern culture. To cite one example, in the 1950s Roger Milliken shifted the headquarters of his family’s Deering-Milliken Company from New York to Spartanburg County, SC. Today, Milliken Company employs more than 3,000 in South Carolina's Upstate alone, making New York's loss a decided gain for the Palmetto state.     It's not that Woodard needs to paint the South in overly rosy terms, as there's much to be critiqued here in Dixie/Appalachia/the Tidwater (including educational performance, state-infrastructural needs, rural poverty, racial inequity, and yes, even wages). But Woodard’s description of the modern south comes across as intellectually lazy and dismissive at best, vitriolic at worst. Even his attempts at recovery fall flat: he acknowledges the failure of northeastern automotive makers in the 1990s, but seems to imply the fault lays with southerners once again, for "luring" corporations away with better offers. How dare they.

    No blame is laid at the feet of union bosses; nor are any of the principles of basic business economics examined. Woodard closes his thoughts by warning about "low-wage export platforms" found in "neo-Confederate" states becoming the new dominant model, and worries that the only "knowledge clusters" left will be in Left Coast cities that "emphasized education and rationalism." Timing was tough for Woodard here, as a mere 3 years after Nations was published, Texas's tech exports had officially surpassed California's (

    4. Over-simplification of existing "nations" and in at least one instance, total dismissal of an existing "nation:" Of all the points made above, I can honestly say I thought of this before reading any additional critical reviews. It's not a complement to myself; I merely grew up in the region he dismisses: the entire Dakota-MN-Wisconsin "midwestern-north." This Germano-Scandinavian region has long had extreme political variances (see the Twin Cities versus Michelle Bachmann's St. Cloud district, separated by mere hours), strong pluralistic tendencies, and an emphasis on ethics and demure blending so effective, they have largely "disappeared" into the fabric of "Americana" and the midwest. Woodard doesn't see it this way, and has apparently never seen "Fargo," so he just dumps the 11 million or so speakers with a "MN accent" into Yankeedom. It’s a laughably poor decision, leading to blasé descriptions that the very people living there would not recognize.

    Conclusion: Woodard's Nations certainly reveals some interesting regional truths based on socio-ethnic and cultural lines, but a paucity of sources, historical inaccuracies, and an increasingly polemic tone undermine the work. One can't avoid the sneaking suspicion that the author's promising premise gradually gives way to an apologetic disguised as history. Perhaps that's to be expected though, given the dual directions of Nations. Woodard ostensibly writes 280 pages of socio-ethnic history, but then tries to hastily blend it with 40 pages of modern political realities and voting patterns. When put together, the former begins to feel more than a bit tailored to suit the latter's present day political conclusions.

    It's interesting how Woodard traces out voting patterns and cultural attitudes according to which "nation" inhabits a region rather than dividing people up by state. My only problem with the book is that, while I tend to agree with all the axes he has to grind, I always worry about a writer's objectivity in reviewing evidence when he or she so agressively and openly grinds those axes in a book. It also means that some people who might find the book very interesting will be turned off by his opinions that have very little to do with the main theory of the book.
