In this sharp-witted romantic comedy about the clash of the classes (of all kinds), a poor girl at a rich kids' school ends up working at the school's toniest club-and gets mistaken for a boy!

In this high anticipated title, a kind of cross between HANA-KIMI and BOYS OVER FLOWERS, Haruhi is a scholarship student at an exclusive private school: Ouran High School, where it turns out the bespectacled, short-haired Haruhi is the only student from a lower-middle class family in attendance!

Then, to make matters worse, one day she breaks an $80,000 vase that belongs to one of the campus clubs-a mysterious outfit called the "Host Club," consisting of six superrich (and gorgeous) guys. Haruhi can't afford to pay back the cost of the vase, of course, so she's forced to work for the Host Club! And it's there that she discovers just how rich all the boys are and how different the rich are from you and me...And meanwhile, the eccentric but good-hearted rich boys are shocked to find out how life is on the other side...

Another great book in the series. Relationships are starting to become a little deeper which is adding character to the characters as well.

Reason #457 why I love this manga
*Haruhi and Hikaru on their date trying to share an ice cream*
Tamaki (dressed up as the clerk): No need to share one! I'm not stingy so here's another one for free
Kaoru (tackling Tamaki): why did you interfere when things were going so well.
Hikaru (unaware of their presence): Too bad Kaoru couldn't come
Kaoru (jumping like a crazy person): BROTHER I'M HERE!

This was a great volume especially with the characters. We learn more about them like Tamaki, he was my favorite in this volume. He has shown a lot of growth even with all the humor he brings in being flustered or annoyed. This volume also has one of my favorite storylines so far that includes the summer break part. Especially in this part of the book we get to see more of the twins connection with each other and Haruhi. Like the little date was cute and funny because they were talking about their friends without knowing they were being followed. And it makes me question whether she will end up with one of the twins or Tamaki. Overall, a great volume that continues the amazing journey of Haruhi as part of the host club.

The summer break chapters were so so cute!! I loved this volume a lot

    Re-read: August 2020
I swear this re-read of the series is just me realizing that past-me had some dumb opinions. Why did I not love the summer vacation arc??? I know that I used to dislike the twins (I don't anymore) but the arc is still really funny even though it centers around them. It's also the first arc where the characters get any real character development. The other episodes in this volume were just as funny and centered around some really memorable side characters. Overall, a super solid volume.

    Re-read: March 2018
This is such a fun series. It has a fun plot, a ton of slapstick humor, and a hilarious cast of characters. This contained to summer vacation arc and, while it's certainly not my favorite story arc, it is entertaining. The differences between the twins are starting to become more clear, and you can definitely see them maturing. As I mentioned in my original review, I love Nekozawa, and his story was awesome. I don't have much to say about this volume, but I had a love of fun with it.

    Original Review
I love how this one had a ton of Nekozawa in it! And of course Beelzenef :)

  • Kat (Lost in Neverland)

My favorite cover of all the manga's so far. I love the blue!!

    After I Finished the Book

Not only my favorite manga cover, my favorite manga VOLUME. (of this series)
It was so funny and sweet, and my new favorite character is definitely Mori, for what reason, I have no idea.

    EEEEEE!!
(Btw: that picture is actually in an episode in this volume.)

It has three of my favorite episodes in it, one with the creepy/hot Nekozawa!!

So, manga isn't really my thing, but I absolutely adored the anime version of this, and I needed more of Ouran's awesomeness, so that's why I decided to read it.

Although most of this was the same as the anime, there was a few new stuff and I liked it.
    Overall, pretty good.

Tamaki is a blessing tbh, he's so funny.

This is definitely my favorite volume yet! For two main reasons, I think: 1) it struck a perfect balance between character building and goofiness (whereas former episodes were mainly comedic or filler-ish), and 2) the guest characters didn't seem to distract from the story of the actual club members, but actually added to it. (I'm biased, because I always prefer solo-club hijinks to guest-inspired hijinks.)

    Episode 17: 4.5/5
Midterm grades come out -- Hunny and Mori are respectively the top of their class, Kyoya and Tamaki respectively the top of theirs, Kaoru and Hikaru fourth and fifth in theirs...but Haruhi only places third, which is a problem because she'll lose her scholarship if she doesn't remain top of the class. All of the boys with good placings offer to tutor her, but Kyoya brings in the top female student in 2-A (third overall), Ayame. Ayame has a huge beef with Tamaki, because she studies and is serious, but he goofs off like a constant imbecile and still tests ahead of her every time. This episode doesn't focus too much on the members, but I still quite enjoyed it.

    Episode 18: 5/5
Tamaki can't get ahold of Haruhi over summer break, and so alerts everyone in the club that she's been kidnapped. In time, Kyoya tells them she's actually just taken a summer job in Karuizawa, working for Misuzu, her father's cross-dressing work friend. Naturally, the Host Club decides to also summer there, but since there's only one guest room, they compete in a "refreshing" contest for Misuzu to gain the spot. Many humorous competition antics ensue.

    Episode 19: 5/5
Haruhi runs into a middle school friend at work in Karuizawa, making all the club boys jealous. With this episode starts a lot of breaking-the-fourth-wall meta stuff about character, which is all hilarious if you can keep up. Arai wins most of the boys over, but the twins hold out. Some really distinctive lines are drawn between Hikaru and Kaoru's characters in this episode. Kaoru is aware of how unhealthily co-dependent they are, but Hikaru isn't, so he snaps and yells at Haruhi and Arai, causing Haruhi to smack him.

    Episode 20: 5/5
The last episode leads right into this one, plot-wise. Kaoru is concerned that Hikaru is so closed off, unreceptive to change, and unable to express emotions, so he sets Hikaru and Haruhi up on a date to socialize his twin. Naturally, the rest of the gang watch the awkwardness ensue from afar. There is much Tamaki-crying, plus Haruhi in a dress with hair extensions, plus the Host Club dressed in disguise to mingle with the commoners.

    Episode 21: 4/5
A little 3 year old girl wanders into the Host Club and mistakes Tamaki for her golden-haired brother, who she's only seem before in a painted portrait. In fact, her brother is the creepy Black Magic Club President, Nekozawa, and the two never met because Nekozawa hates the light, and Kirimi is afraid of the dark. Tamaki takes it upon himself to try to train Nekozawa to abide the light, for his sister's sake. This episode is another meta one, because the little girl is addicted to shojo manga, and sorts all of the Host Club into their "types" quite effectively.

    Bonus Episode: Mori's Secret 5/5
Mori mysteriously begins to act chatty and friendly to everyone, even calling Haruhi cute. Only Hunny is able to figure out the reason for his strange behavior, and since it's only a few pages to read, I won't give away the punchline. Mori is one of my favorites though, so I loved this extra.

(Sidenote: for some reason, the one-liners Mori got in the episode's of this volume all struck me as completely hilarious, moreso than usual.)

    February 24

One day, Haruhi, a scholarship student at exclusive Ouran High School, breaks an $80,000 vase that belongs to the 'Host Club', a mysterious campus group consisting of six super-rich (and gorgeous) guys. To pay back the damages, she is forced to work for the club, and it's there that she discovers just how wealthy the boys are and how different they are from everybody else.

Review : loved the stories in this volume. Haruhi got in third in her midterms so she has to retest so she is being tutored and the tutor hates tamaki cause he gets second where shes at third she has a grade complex she ends up stealing Tamaki bear for some reason. Haruhi ends up getting a job and the host club finds her . Hikaru ends up getting jealous of this guy Haruhi went to middle school with . Karu sets up a date between Hikaru and Haruhi but they end up running into the guy she went to school with Hikaru ran off and thunderstorms scare Haruhi so she ends up hiding in a church so Hikaru finds her and comforts her . A little girl thinks tamaki is her brother her actual brother is a member of the black magic club and he has issues with sunlight and he looks a lot like tamaki without his wig . Tamaki helps him with the light issues so he can be around his sister who is afraid of the dark when a cat almost attacks his sister he saves her .

  • Pirl

    I fucking LOVE Hikaru

  • Miss Ryoko

Oh lord... I love the twins.

Dayum... Mori was lookin' pretty sexy during the refreshing contest in Karuizawa!! Hahahaha!! But also.... they were ALL lookin' pretty darn sexy when the host club was dressed up like police officers! Yes ma'am!! Lol!!

I really don't want Haruhi and Tamaki to end up together like I know they will. I really don't want Haruhi to end up with any of them, but she will because it is a shojo manga. I really love how nonchalant and oblivious because she doesn't care she is. She's so great! I don't want her ruined by the boys... *sigh* Usually happens with good female leads.

    Anyway, on to the next!

This volume has all my favorite moments and MORE specially the secret of Mori-sempai. i couldn't believe it!!

  • Natalie

I'm in love with this series! I look forward to reading it every night. It just makes me giggle and there are lots of surprisingly sweet moments.

A key point of Haruhi's scholarship is that she academically maintain first place in her class, but alas, she is third! Kyoya gets the smartest girl from his grade to tutor Haruhi. (And, surprise, surprise, Kyoya is first in his grade, and Tamaki is second!)

But, alas! Ayame is not a fan of Tamaki.

Haruhi has a summer job and the whole crew comes to find her! There is not enough room for all of them at the inn so the owner (Haruhi's Dad's friend) starts a "refreshing points" contest. Whoever wins gets to stay. It's a fierce battle!

Hikaru gets jealous when Haruhi meets an old friend. Kaoru explains that it's hard for them to share, because in the past all they ever had was each other. He sets up Hikaru and Haruhi on a date. Obviously Tamaki is not thrilled.

I love the relationship between Haruhi and the twins. I love watching them change as they come to care for Haruhi.

A small lass, Kirimi, shows up and thinks that Tamaki is her brother. Turns out her older brother is actually Nekozawa. They are torn apart due to his fondness for the dark, and her love of light. The Club bands together to help Newkozawa with the light so he can be a prince for his sister. This is not one of my favorite episodes, but I do think it's hilarious when Kirimi names all of them after trope-y manga characters. (She called Kyoya the "megane" character and I was so pleased to remember that meant "glasses" in Japanese! Slowly but surely my Japanese study is paying off!)

I love this series! I'm so so glad I just went for it and bought the whole box set. I'm loving it more than I could've imagined I would.

  • Lou (Lou and Life)

This one is one of my more liked volumes due to a few of my favourite chapters/scenes taking place. I didn't particularly like the first chapter with Haruhi failing to make first place in midterms and she has to work hard in the makeup exam. I felt like the scholarship requirement of her needing to be first place or she would be expelled is extremely harsh, and I think it would have been more interesting if the manga explored Haruhi as a scholarship student rather than the tutor who is obsessed with Tamaki. I did like where the next few chapters were based with it being summer vacation and Haruhi working a summer job. I didn't like how the host club blackmailed their way into spending the summer with her, but I like seeing Haruhi bond more intimately with the twins and how we got to know the twins more as individuals. With Hikaru being the more emotional, possessive, and less intelligent one, and Kaoru being the more calculating, cunning, and clever one. I liked seeing the date Hikaru and Haruhi go on and the scenes with the host club following them made me laugh out loud. I also liked the last chapter where it focused on the side character Nekozawa and how his sister thinks that Tamaki is her brother. I liked this chapter because it provided more development on a side character which probably didn't need exploring but I liked going on the journey regardless. I don't know if I would recommend this manga series but I am enjoying my read of it

Another 4 star. I’m hoping the next one will be back up to the 5 star mark!

Learning about Haruhi’s scholarship situation and how she needs to keep the top spot in her class (like PRESSURE) was good information to have. I liked that the top girl in Tamaki’s class hates him but it’s because she’s in love with him. ^.^ That made me giggle.

After the exams episode, we go into summer break. I thought it was funny how each host club member had invited Haruhi to spend time at one of their summer homes. It’s cute how much they dote on her while also picking on her and making her life troublesome.

The part that lost me was how much time we’re spending in Karuizawa. There were three episodes there, but then I didn’t feel like the third episode was fully ended. We just jump into a story about Nekozawa’s sister instead of finishing the Hikaru/Haruhi storyline. I’m glad Hikaru and Haruhi are getting closer. I think it’ll be good for him to have friends outside his twin-ship with Kaoru. However, I think he’ll probably develop romantic feelings for her and I don’t think that’s what’s best for him. I’ll just have to wait and see!

I have the 5 next volumes on hold through the library, and I can foresee some more coming in within the next couple of days. I should probably take a break from these to finish the 7th Harry Potter book though… oops.

There's some new part that I didn't know, in ayame's past story about she used to got second place n kyoya got first place, when tamaki involved, everything changed - kyoya first place, tamaki in 2nd place while her was in thirds place. That's why she hate tamaki even though she took tamaki teddy bear. Hikaru & haruhi date moments ❤️. Nekozawa's guy - getting warm up to him in character & his little sister ( I have to say it, I don't like her) - its annoying. Mori's secret - omgosh!!! Mori can talk in more words in his cheerful manners. Only hunny can help him change his ways, in the end he's a sleep.

  • Sarah

I said it before and I'll say it again, the Hitachiins are my favorite part of this series. In this volume they get so much amazing development and I just eat it right up. Their individual personalities really start to show, with Hikaru emerging as a bit of a hothead and Kaoru being such a softie. The Karuizawa arc is just *chefs kiss*

  • Hannah

Haruhi's date was the stand out story.

  • Milo (if lost, return to any conveniently hot mmc)

One of my favorite volumes! I love the summer vacation chapters that are centered on the twins, especially Hikaru. The special chapter on Mori is hilarious!
