I was charmed by this book's beautiful cover work and and found out that the story although a bit on the outdated side is just as charming as well as even stronger in this time and age. What makes it so interesting to me is the fact that I had been thinking over some articles that I had read in which parents were claiming that by teaching your child to share than you are training them for failure since they are giving up the rewards for their own hard work instead of where sharing helps everybody no matter how low you are in the system.

All in all it was a great story about sharing as well as at the same time about being positive, seeing things in a more optimistic light for the farmer was feeling good. The reader is taken on a plot-path in which the farmer's generous joy for the day was rewarded by the success of his whole farm even if one may think a few of the animals pests.

The artwork is amazingly simple and mostly in a block format so some of the details are left out. These missing details, though, don't detract from the story but actually add to it for the timework was put into other items that add to the story whether in detail or in color.

All in all a beautiful and quick read that I think still should be used even if you may be one of those who thinks freeloading or sharing is out of style in this time and age.

These illustrations were done first in 1955 and to my eyes they remain beautiful in their simplicity and in the hue of the colors. The purple through the story is stunning. A very simplistic story about the barnyard creatures finding a feast. As some background on this artist I just read about her at Wikipedia. Fascinating life she lead and her paintings and sculpture are in many well known American museums. This picture book has enticed me to learn more about the artist's life and work.

    It's no
Caps for Sale, but still a fantastic lesson on how exactly some elements of trickle-down economics work.

Okay, that's a bit of an exaggeration, but it does demonstrate how the IS–LM model (Investment Saving–Liquidity Preference Money Supply) works. The farmer, by not saving the surplus feed, improves the entire farm's economy. Whether or not he intended to benefit the mouse or ant, we're always going to encounter free rider problems.

I like this book a lot, but the preschool audience at storytime didn't quite seem to "get it".

The story is decent enough, didn't care for the illustrations at all.
