When the inhabitants of Rome weren't governing their empire many of them were up to no good. That is the premise of this accesible, although in German, study of `city that never sleeps'. Drawing on archaeological, literary and artistic evidence, Weeber examines what Romans got up to by torchlight, including visiting inns, gambling houses, and brothels. High Roman society was not without its scandals and so the book also looks at the famous cases of Messalina, the wife of Claudius, and, of course, the court of Nero.
