Sense And Sensibility: The Diaries Reviews
-
A wonderful funny insight to the filming of sense and sensibility. I loved the memories of Alan Rickman <3
-
Emma Thompson is funny and does share some private moments from the set but it feels very 'written' and lacks the intimacy of a true diary. I suppose that's to be expected.
I think this would be an interesting read for someone wanting to know about the film are made as the processes are really spelled out for the reader. -
This "diary" is highly selective -- and although Emma Thompson is surprisingly open about sharing her physical ailments (wind, cystitis, yeast infection) with the reader, she is more reticent about the bigger emotional dramas going on. Except for a few brief mentions, as when she describes him as "ruffling everyone's feathers," she completely avoids mentioning Greg Wiseman -- or the fact that she fell in love with him during the making of this film.
Still, it is an engaging read -- and I enjoyed learning more about how movies made. Apparently, it really IS a lot of boredom and standing around (waiting for the weather to change, in this one) -- punctuated by moments of high stress. I was surprised by how insecure and self-criticial Thompson was in this diary, especially when you consider that she had just experienced such great success with Howards End and The Remains of the Day. After I read this diary, I watched the film again and it was exciting to see how it "all came together" after much fussing and fretting. -
I have been reading this alongide my re-reading of Sense and Sensibility and thoroughly enjoying it. The other evening I also watched the movie again. I loved the backstory of the writing of the screenplay and the filming of the novel. Anyone who liked Jane's
book and Emma Thompson's movie version will also like The Diaries. -
Dame Emma is a national treasure no matter the nationality. Absolutely bawling laughter the whole time.
Also why did no one tell me before that she did the screenplay for Sense & Sensibility?!? -
A fun, light read that gave a good (brief) sense of what it's like during filming.
-
Just as funny and delightful and charming as Emma herself.
-
Joyous. Fun reading. Read over a day and a babys nap. Lovely titbits throughout.

⭐️ 4.5 Stars ⭐️ This is a great read after or before watching the 1995 Sense and Sensibility as Emma, as always, says it how it is and doesn't mind making fun of herself with her witty words and out there remarks. Written in a diary form I often felt like I was reading Bridget Jone's Diary, with her "go on then just one more cig" attitude and her obsessing about not looking "old" and "spotty". I especially loved how Emma wrote about her relationship and love of Jane Austen and her works, often referring to "Jane" by name and trying to live in a way she would 'somewhat' approve of the get into character.
And as a fellow Jane Austen geek, I loved her "It's in the book!" comment to her fellow cast and crew when they questioned her screenwriting choices. My only criticism is that I would have loved to of had more mention of Greg, her now husband as she met him through the movie and it's always been something I wanted to know more about even since finding out about their love story. -
This is a marvellous piece of writing. Not one redundant word. Sharp, witty, touching, funny. I laughed sooo hard a couple of times, so if you want to embarrass yourself in public, go ahead and read it on public transport. ;)
Read it in one go even though I was tired. Hasn't happened in a while.
Unfortunately it is far too short. I could read a thousand pages of Emma Thompson‘s point of view, thoughts, intelligence, unique emotionality, sense, and sensibility. -
This is Emma Thompson's diary while she was filming Sense and Sensibility. It's fascinating to experience the whole process through Emma Thompson's eyes. Her writing (even in her personal diary) is honest and poignant... I love it!
-
Fabulous book for any Emma Thompson fan! She's so funny and self-deprecating, my only reason for it not getting 5 stars is because it's too short!
-
A delight.
