Winter's Tale Reviews

This is a work of art in these pages. There is incredible mechanical engineering to make this all work. I have read Robert’s books before and they are some of the best ones in the Pop-up world. Each page is complex with several animals on it. Things move and spin and it’s amazing. There is a flap to open and there is more text and story to read and another pop-up, smaller, but some of them are still complex. I love these books.

The nephew loves these books. He read this to me and he kept getting absorbed in the page of pop-up. He spent time reading this book on his own and being absorbed by how it all worked. It was a 5 star review for him.

This is a splendid, sparkling tale of winter! I have been in love with Robert Sabuda's paper art, pop-up books for years and this one is stunning. Each page is a winter wonderland of animals. From a snowy owl to a magnificent moose, we are immersed in their winter worlds. The last page is especially breathtaking with a little snowbound house that lights up (small battery required) when you turn the page. I read this story to children for years and it never failed to light up their eyes with delight. A perfect winter tale!

If you've never experienced a Robert Sabuda pop-up book, get your hands on one today! This is a beautiful display of ingenuity with a great story woven in. I've shared this with all elementary grades and intakes of breath from the first page to last from the students is something I'll never forget. Beautiful!

This is a wonderful pop-up book with beautiful winter animal cut-outs. It's a shame this fragile book will no doubt be destroyed by our young library patrons.

  • Margaret Klein

What a magical book. I am slowly building a collection of all of these and can't wait to add this to my physical shelf!

  • Laura

    Another great classic.

This was an amazing Book! All the pop-ups are BEAUTIFUL and AMAZING. I went thru the book a few times before I 'discovered' the flaps on the sides. With very few words the author is so expressive and told a beautiful story about winter!
I think this book would be great to teach about what animals do in the winter. It only gives a brief introduction into the life of animals in the winter but it could be used as an introduction into that topic.
This book is a concept picture book.

If you are not familiar with Robert Sabuda.... you are really missing out! My dear friend Nanette just gave me this magical gift. While the story is BEYOND simplistic.... that is not the reason for the book. The pop up images done in white card stock are simply mnystifying and are beyond complex! As I looked at it.... I thought how cool it would be to walk through this wintr wonderland if I were small enough! Go figure and I am not even on mind altering substances!

Yes, it's a pop-up book...but it's so intricately formed that I find myself sneaking to read it in a dark room even after my little boy is fast asleep...and dwelling with star-gazed eyes at the surprise on the final page.

Robert Sabuda is the master of pop up books. They are GORGEOUS! This one is no exception. The story is secondary at best (it's hard to remember to even read it). This isn't my favorite of his, but it's lovely.

Another great pop-up book by Robert Sabuda. I felt as if I was in a winter wonderland with all the animals from the the forest. This book gives the opportunity to talk about winter and what certain animals do during that time.

It wasn't what I expected. The pop-up art is amazing, I just didn't love the story that much. I think I was expecting more of a Christmas feel.
