My Only King Reviews

I enjoyed the first story, I wish it was actually longer because the rest of the stories were not that interesting and the last one was down right creepy with the kids in the bathtub.

My Only King by Lily Hoshino contains a couple of one-shot stories bundled in one tome. The stories are the following:
1. My Only King: Fantasy, the main story of the volume, it tells the story between a human high-school student named Kazuomi and Mewt when by mistake, [Kazuomi] receives a magical crest (belonging to the annotated king) that allows its bearer to withhold power and its very sought after. Then, appears Mewt a sorcerer and protector of the royal crest which will be taking care of protecting Kazuomi while they [the other worldly beings] manage to lift the crest. In the meantime, Kazuomi and Mewt will start to spend more time together.
2. Twinkle Twinkle horoscope: Fiction slight fantasy, At a regular day at school, two girls and two boys are talking about their current events such as Masuzawa which tells them that his girlfriend just broke up with him. As they talk about his break-up, the girls suggest that his horoscope says he may meet someone and end up together and he might do well with someone that is an Aquarius...and it so happens his best male friend is an Aquarius.
3. The Ghost in the Bath: fantasy/paranormal (no horror though), After a long day at work, Mr. Issei arrives home to take a shower specially since his bathtub is haunted by a cute young male, and they have developed a friendship.
4. Mixed Chocolate: Fiction, [this one actually has other stories found in early/other print books] which tells the story of two boys remembering their younger selfs and how things came to be.
5. The King and Rune: Fantasy/dark-fantasy, May be one of Lily's earlier works as the artstyle is different, retells the story of a magical realm with nine quite terrible kingdoms, in which the ninth king sells children for profit. It sounds horrible but I won't tell anything more as that would spoil the story.
Overall thoughts: (CONTAINS SPOILERS)
When I saw this cover and read the blurb I thought this would be a whole story, not a couple of one-shots in one volume. I do not mind, but the moment I saw the first story ended I was left floating. The reason? it doesn't end well in my opinion and the mangaka could have developed this story even further. Is not the first time she has written fantasy-yaoi stories (like Metropolitan Magic Academy), so this story which takes almost half of the volume al ready could have developed even further such as: we never see these dangerous entities that may want to steal the seal, we never know what would happen after the crest is given back to the actual king, and of course we are never going to know what will happen to them overall. Twinkle Twinkle is actually ok as it has a beginning and ending though of course people may wonder why would these guys that seem to be hetero suddenly are open to try with a person of the same sex, but with these one-shots it is almost impossible to explain this development, but if I may add Masuzawa seemed already bored with girls so there is that. The third story I would've liked to know the reason as to why the ghost couldn't move on (and why it died there of course), though I liked that they were more friends and haven't had nothing just yet. The fourth one I don't want to go into much details as this one is connected to other stories. The final one: another one that could be a bit more developed if she wanted/could though I was satisfied with the story overall, it had an intro and an ending and it was quite well done; as for the art style it seems it was one of her earlier works as it was different, though I didn't mind that as much as the story was quite good, could be material for an animation as it could stretch and such. In summary, I gave it 4 stars as though I ADORE her art and creativity I would have love to know beforehand that these were one-shot stories and at least for My Only King a better ending. Also please note that Lily has a certain style, there will always be a more feminine male character than the other, if you do not like this then at least know this beforehand. I love her artwork and its super beautiful so Lily Hoshino will always be one of my favorite yaoi mangaka. -
Published in 2006.
This book is so cute, the art and story is endearing! The final chapters are of different characters though. -
This is very soft yaoi, boys cuddling boys. It hardly even feels like yaoi, because the uke (submissive partner) of the pair, looks exactly like a girl sans breasts. So, this really isn't the story for you if you are seeking a yaoi story.
This is an anthology and frankly most of the other shorts in this story suffer from the same problems, totally feminine uke and not much romantic action. The story I enjoyed the most in this book is the last story, about an orphan belonging to a slave trader who kept getting returned every time he was sold until he finally ended up with his slave trader owner and lived happily ever after. Even this uke was effeminate, but at least did not look exactly like a girl.
This book is a good bit of romantic fluff short stories, if you want a story full of cuddles and occasional kisses. -
First things first: this is very much a Lily Hoshino book. That means cute hijinks, misunderstandings, love at first sight, and one person in the main couple being one of her trademark very feminine guys that often get mistaken for girls by unobservant readers. Only this one has magic! Yay, magic! My Only King is a fun yaoi title with a fantasy twist.

Once again I was a bit put off by how girly the ukes were, it is the autors drawing style, but over all it was cute if not a bit rushed.
