As a work of historical fiction, this novels shows the reader the rich world of ancient Egypt (14th century BCE) and the author paints a vivid image of how people lived in that time period. As a novel based off actual people - Pharaoh Akenhaten and Nefertiti) among others, the author takes great liberties with these personas. Little is known about the personal details of the royal family, or how these people were personally, so this story should be read as historical fiction, and nothing but. A few actual points in history are actually used here, such as Akenhaten's trying to get rid of old gods in favor of Aten.

The story is told from the POV of Nefertiti's younger sister, which adds dimension to this book as there are several chapters where Nefertiti is absent, so the focus is more on life in Egypt than the relationship between the two sisters and makes for a balanced story.

Having read Nefertiti, I dove into this book. As the author freely attests, although this story is based off actual history, personal details about the historical figures are almost pure fiction. I found the story itself to be entertaining, and I was intrigued by the addition of Moses in here... it was interesting to see his story presented without any of the magic in the Old Testament, and the author's research makes this story feel real. It was a worthy sequel to Nefertiti, and actually spurred me to read about the actual figures in this book and learn about what little is actually known about them.

I have mixed feelings about Cleopatra's Daughter. While it's clear that the author did her historical fiction, and Alexander Helios and Ptolemy did indeed die young, there was much here that was embellished, and I would have liked better if the author had included a greater timeframe, because she is not the only author who wrote about Cleopatra Selene, with the same time frame as other novels about the same person! This book is not as strong as the previous two and would have been better if it was based off another Egyptian queen (or at least a woman) like the previous two.

I love EVERYTHING that I’ve ready by Michelle Moran.

Books 1 and 2 are set in ancient Egypt and follow Nefertiti and then her niece through their fascinating stories of heresy, treason, betrayal, and rebirth.

Then Book 3 jumps in a few thousand years later and sweeps us off to ancient Rome with Cleopatra’s daughter and her story of betrayal, survival, and love.
You could read each of these books as a standalone book and not be lost but to really soak up the story and history, I definitely recommend starting with Book 1.

The author Michelle Moran has to be one of my top go to read authors, her style of writing is captivating, almost as if each word on paper flows like the harmonious rhythm of the most beautiful classical music you would hear. She has managed to be able to write in a style that draws you into her pages to make you feel as if you are walking, seeing and living in the story in the moment. Truly a fantastic author.
