In Las Vegas, Jason Cage is known as "The Beast Master." But his onstage feats of magic are nothing compared to the abilities he keeps hidden from human eyes. Jason is Prime of his vampire family, and once used his telepathic skills to tame wild werewolves. It's a talent that leads him to beautiful, sensual Sofia Hunyara, who instantly triggers all of Jason's primal urges. Sofia is destined to be his bondmate, but keeping her alive long enough to convince her of that fact will not be easy.
Sofia has no reason to trust Jason, or to believe his story about her family's secret history as Wolf Tamers. The only thing she's sure of is an overwhelming attraction that quickly develops into a scorching affair. If Jason's claims are true, can Sofia embrace her legacy -- when it means walking away from a soul-searing desire that's deeper than any she's ever known?

Have you ever read a book where you are totally and completely lost like going through a maze and there is no end in sight? Bring on Primal Desires.
Primal Desires is a story that I REALLY should have waited on because I totally believe this series needs to be read in order. Now I am one of those readers that can catch on pretty quickly, especially when I enter the series in the middle or even in the later part of the books. However upon reading Primal Desires I was completely lost and I really had no clue what was actually going on. Even after finishing the book, I was a bit baffled and realized I should have grabbed the previous books in the series. So as I look back on the story I actually read I realize now how lost I was and now I wish I could share what actually happens in the book but I might just confuse myself so I am just going to share what I liked and disliked about the story.
So what was I drawn to that kept me reading Primal Desires? I just couldn't help but fall for the actual romance. I will say the love connection between Jason and Sofia was really intriguing. Of course we deal with the whole "fated mate" trope, so if you don't like that....don't read this book or the series. Because it deals with vampires and werewolves and other doggy creatures I totally didn't really understand or get. Back to the good romantic stuff....the connection between them is pretty instantaneous. However it takes some work. Sofia doesn't understand what is going on or why Jason would want her in the ways that he does. Jason does have the patience of a saint because it takes a while for Sofia to really believe what Jason is telling her and showing her. She tends to be a bit naive and avoids confrontation and we see her go through this self discovery journey and it's not all painless.
I also felt there was a ton of dynamics in culture and world building that really confused me the most. Because obviously I entered the series in the worst way because there is a lot of elements going on that I still am not sure I understand. But I want to know more about this world that Sizemore has created for us here. And with this series that contains eleven books, I definitely have my work cut out for me to getting caught up and getting more depth into this fabulous world of vampires and werewolves and heads on engaging characters that are immediately likeable and as a reader you become so easily attached to them.

This should have been at least two books
Primal Desires suffers from lack of focus, too many threads, un-interesting flashbacks, and from too many characters stealing the spotlight from the main romance. Where I normally enjoy the complexity and depth that multiple threads bring to a story, here the threads are superficial and the switching back and forth between so many different characters and flashing back not only bogged down the pace, but also left no room for the interesting scene I would have loved to see -- the rescue of Sofia's father.
Jason is a wonderful character introduced in Sizemore's Primal Heat, who had a glamorous life as a Vegas star and who's painful past separated him from the rest of the Primal world. None of that is brought into this book and it keeps his romance from having the depth it could have. Sophia is ok, but not developed enough to feel like she is really worthy of Jason. Fortunately the mate-bond is blind and chemistry is all that matters anyway.
One thread deserved to have its own book - Mike and Cathy's romance. If Sizemore had some how integrated Justin and Sofia's romance and her development into a were-tamer into Justin's glitzy stage world, then the whole Nazi werewolf plot could have been Mike and Cathy's book. Theirs is the story I would have like to have read more of. Sizemore could have milked the pathos - exploiting Mike's conflict between his feelings for Cathy and his duty to the were-kind as Tracker. Shown him on the edge of sliding back into alcoholism, with Cathy redeeming him in the end. The Bleythrin werewolve/detective brothers have been under-utilized in the Sizemore's last two books -- and that doesn't change here -- it was disappointing that Mike and Cathy didn't get their fair screen time.
If you are new to the Prime series do not start with this book, it doesn't stand alone well. Except for the heroine and the bad guys, all the other characters have been introduced in the previous two books and with all the other stuff going on in this book there was no attempt to bring a new reader up to speed. None of the old characters are fleshed out here. Sizemore also assumes that you are familiar with the Prime world and the rules of its vamp and were societies.
If you don't care if your romances have a great plot with fleshed out characters, there is plenty of steamy stuff to fill the pages. I may buy Sizemore's next book, which will likely be Sidonie's story, but I won't rush out to buy it new. -
Jason Cage is known in Las Vegas as "The Beast Master", no-one knowing that he is in fact a vampire. His telepathic skills were used before to tame wild werewolves. Sofia Hunyara is ignorant of her heritage and her ability to also control werewolves. She lives in fear of dogs since some tried to attack her when she was younger. Shortly before her father was convicted of murder.
Jason has to get Sofia to accept her powers and to join the good guys before the bad guys control her. But can he control his feelings for her.
It's pretty predictable, with some plot details glossed over and some places where I had to wonder if things were going to go badly for the characters, still quite readable. -
Jason Cage performs as the beast master in Las Vegas. On his break from Vegas he is summoned by an old friend from his past. Sofia Hunyara is coming to the reading of the will from her grandfather and with no knowledge to her legacy. Jason Cage used his telepathic abilities to help the Hunyara family tame a pack of feral wolves in the past and now they are asking for his help in a similar situation which involves Sofia's training. Jason knows Sofia is destined to be his bond mate but getting her to accept will be another obstacle.
Now Jason must train his bond mate and also help her in finding her cousin Cathy who is missing. Since this is the same Cathy that is friends with werewolves and vampires, brings new situations and history of the Hunyara's into the light. -
I have read most of Sizemore's books of this genre, and I have to say that I had a hard time gettin into this one. It wasn't bad, I just coulding get into it. I don't know if the material just wasn't that entertaining, or if I just wasn't in a receptive mood when I read it.
An average book for me, but as I didn't enjoy it, for whatever reason, I only rated it 2stars, over my usual 3stars for an average good read. -
This story changes up the formula a bit since it relies very heavily on the werewolf aspect of the Prime universe. Jason Cage is the Beast Master, performing an animal act in Las Vegas. A long time ago he taught a family how to tame and control the feral werewolves in their clan and promised to do so in the future whenever it was necessary. He's called on to fulfill that promise with Sofia Hunyara, who has no idea that werewolves even exist. But he agrees to introduce her to the paranormal world and to exercise her power to control werewolves...he also realizes that she's his bondmate and works that in their pretty gently as well. Sofia though is less interested in learning this skill than she is in finding her missing cousin Cathy. Sofia doesn't realize that Cathy is a feral werewolf, but they do soon realize that it's another branch of the Hunyara family who have kidnapped her (and are trying to take Sofia as well), intent on breeding with them in order to create a master race of werewolves. Jason stays by Sofia's side, fostering their bond and trying to protect her.
If the story had centered primarily on Sofia and Jason, I think I would have liked this a whole lot more. Jason and Sofia have a very passionate, yet very respectful relationship. There's not a lot of that alpha posturing and pushing away stuff going on. They seem to both accept that they're bonding and want to be together. But there's a whole cast of secondary characters here who seem to be getting stories of their own and I'm not liking where the story seems to be going with this... There's Cathy and Mike Bleythin, both werewolves, who have a romance of their own in this story that is actually concluded. Mike doesn't want to love a feral werewolf in case he ends up having to kill it (being the enforcer of werewolves)...but he loves Cathy. So they have to work things out, but it's over really quickly...despite all his objections all she has to do is seduce him and they no longer exist. Then there's the drama with Sidonie and Joe and her issues with the clan responsibilities. This is the side story that I'm not caring for and I find myself contemplating not reading the next book because of it. Sid is obligated by her clan to produce vampire children, which means vampire fathers. Only she's in love with werewolf Joe Bleythin. So she's working out how to have a child on her own...she settles on artificial insemination and at first decides that Jason Cage is the perfect choice. She spends the entire book evaluating his DNA potential and even talks to him and Sofia about using his sperm for her task. In the most ridiculous situation I've seen yet, Sofia actually tries to convince Jason to donate his sperm to give Sofia a child...a woman she barely knows and she seems okay with her giving birth to her soul mate's child, just so long as there's no sex. That was my WTF moment for this story. If they'd been friends, I might have bought it, but no way, no how was that anything but weird and creepy. So at the end of the story, we know that Like I said, I'm not thrilled with the direction the next book is taking and I'm not so thrilled with Sidonie being the next heroine either. But I'll read it and try to be optimistic... -
I think this might be on me - as I haven't read any previous books in the series - so pretty much all of what was going on flew right over my head.
I was confused and bored, as the author switched back and forth in time and characters POV, not just the main couple but other characters as well. Who? When? What? I kept asking myself. Trying to recall the name of the main girlie - Sofia (I think) not the other female character who got a lot of POV time and was talking about babies etc. Like I said, confusing.
The whole fated. mates thing is hard, you need to convince me that these characters are in love, not just lust. And as the author had a hard time convincing Sofia, then I didn't stand a chance. Plus throwing our special snowflake Sofia into a magical world she knows nothing about? Been there done that so much better in so many other books. I hated stumbling around heroines.
So kind of on. me - but at the same time I don't think I would enjoy this world or these characters enough to chase book 1 and read the whole series, so that is on the author. -
Part of a series and it does not stand alone. There were too many characters and not enough development. The plot was weak, it was about a vampire "prime" who was summoned to California to help the same family that he helped during World War II. They must find the neo-nazis who are attempting to eliminate vampires and werewolves in the hopes of creating a master race of half-werewolves, half humans.

This novel really didn't surprise me at all. I kind of expected a spin-off of the last novel's characters. I would have been very disappointed if there wasn't one. I did enjoy the plot to this novel immensely, because it brought something new to the table. And everyone knows that to make a series great you need new information to keep it going. This novel definitely did all of that and more. It was extremely to my liking and was very enjoyable to read. The characters in this novel got along with each other beautiful. They even complimented each other's personalities without actually mixing them together. Which can be hard to do sometimes.
Sofia was by far my favorite character in the whole novel. She has a lot of courage in her just waiting to be let loose. When she was younger she was attacked by werewolves and ever since then she's been afraid of dogs. This hasn't stopped her from doing what she believes is right though. Although, now she might just be given a run for her money when she's told she's a wolf tamer. This does nothing but confuse her and even more so when The Beast Master tells her he's going to train her. Jason Cage made a promise to her ancestor that he'd help train the next Wolf Tamer. Now he has to fulfill his promise in less time than he has. Jason is an edgy character that has a somewhat shady past. He's served his time, but have never forgotten what he's done to deserve it. Because of this his powers are restricted in certain ways. Ways that could mean life or death for Sofia herself. There are people after her and her family that will do whatever they can to get them. They already have her cousin, now all they need is her. So not only is it Jason's job to train her, but he must protect her as well. Otherwise, he may just lose his Bondmate mate.
I'd have to say that this was a paranormal, romance, and mystery novel. The paranormal romance is quite obvious, but if it needs to be explained it's because of all the supernatural creatures in it. The romance wasn't your typical romance, which made this novel so much better. The characters try to draw you into it which makes it a little more exciting for the reader. It's like they want you to know it's a romance novel, but they're also going to put it off a bit. I rather enjoyed this part of the plot because it was unique in its own way. There was also a dangerous mystery twist to this novel. It was a page turner that had me wondering what was going to happen next. This spiced up the novel quite a bit. Overall, it was a great novel and I would definitely recommend this to anybody that's willing to read it.

This is just a God awful book with nothing going for it. This is the 6Th in the series and shouldn't be considered a stand-alone. The story is EVERYWHERE, so many throwbacks and surprises that are necessary but poorly executed.
Sophia is not a likeable character. She is too flimsy to be considered a strong female character, and all her character had was her blog and mentioning twice her college. Twice. What was her major? Minor? And why did she have a blog about reviewing classic stories? Anyone who would be interested has probably already read the books and watched the movies..... Jason... He's an idiot. I get that the Primes are vain, horny, and etcetera, but there is no character development, or at least any development that gives me appreciation to the MCs. Not even the sex is good. Every sex scene is about like this: four lines for foreplay and one paragraph for the sex and collapse. That one paragraph is maybe two or three sentences. It's not worth my time, though it's my own dang fault... I held out to the end just hoping for a something that could bring up my rating, but there is nothing...
The beginning when Uncle Pashta clapped? What was the reason behind the clap? She was scared witless and wasn't even in reality when it was over. I get why there was a clap the first time, though it took several chapters to get. He didn't kill the wolves and could be trusted if he didn't want to.
What about the ending? What exactly resulted in the end? This book didn't have any conclusions, except Sophia quit college and is now performing with Jason on stage.... What happened to everything else? Did they stop the Nazi-descended white supremacists? Did the werewolves ostracized Cathy and Mike?
This was a clash of thoughts that had no organization to it. -
3.5 stars
I so remember why I didn't finish this series right away. It just reads like an old woman or my mom would write a romance book. Cheesy, not really dated, but will be dated because of Harry Potter references etc. Romance skimmed over like they were afraid their kids might read it an be all embarrassed.
Anyway, this was an animal tamer vamp guy from Las Vegas who receives half of a coin amulet & knows what its about. He meets the woman with the other half when they are both summoned to San Diego. She is an Hunyara, I guess a new intro species ~ mortal decended from a werewolf & vampire mating several generations back. She has a psychic power to control werewolves & animals. So does he. Soooo of course Jason Cage & Sofia are natural bond mates because they have a similar gift.
The background story is that Sofia's cousin is a feral wolf (bitten, not born) and a hunyara as well. This group wants her as their alpha female to breed an uber race to take over the world. Sofia & a bunch of vamps & weres work together to help rescue her. Then there is also a situation of Sofias dad in prison... They have to break him out too.
This book opend so many new characters all at one, I got confused as to who was a vamp or were until the end. Oh well. Since I do own all of these books, I'm going to read them. They are a super fast read even though this one was arounf350 pages. There was no real thought involved until the intor to all these people at once that I thought were weres but were vamps too. Otherwise it was pretty good. Cheesy, but good. I did know that going in, so it's laughable. -
Another excellent novel in the Primes series!
I adored Sofia. I thought that, although it was quite a bit to take in at the beginning for her, she adjusted quickly and quite well. Strong in mind and body, she manages to make sense of everything thrown her way and finally accepts what she is. What I thought was really neat with Sofia was how Sizemore turned her into one of us bookaholics, where Sofia even has a blog of her own where she reviews books and movies. I thought it was really touching to Sizemore's readers. Although it has a small part in the plot, I was glad for it - you don't read enough of characters who are like us book nuts, LOL!
Jason Cage is exactly as he is in previous novels, and I'm glad he doesn't change - except towards Sofia. She's the only one who can make him melt the way the reader so desperately wants for him. Strong in his own right, physically and mentally, he finally finds his bondmate with Sofia - and as the reader, you feel all of it!
Good plot, great action, with little twists and small sub-plots that the reader appreciates and they don't take away from the story at all.
Recurring characters that you know and like, evil ones that you loathe and want to 'take care of', and an argument that begins in this novel between Sidonie and Joe that I already know continues in the next novel, Primal Needs, due out in December 2008, brings promise and anticipation for anyone who loves this series.
Don't hesitate to read it. I don't think you'll be disappointed. -
The idea of wolf tamers is really interesting to say the least. With the hints and peeks into Sid and Joe's relationship you would hope that this revelation would be helpful to their current plight, but we will see.
It is rather aggravating how the men can do what they like and the women have to bow to custom. Matriarchial society my butt.
Anyway, Jason's story isn't the normal history of the other primes we've met in this series. One thing I really like about this series is how the stories are rich in detail, but not bogged down by the descriptions of them. If that makes any sense at all.... You get to learn about why he had to go to vampire prison, Sophie's family background, and some things in the past with the utilization of flash backs which are used almost masterfully in my opinion. -
Even though I'm acquainted with this series as I've read two other books,
I found this one chaotic.
There were far too many characters, too many pairings, too many flashbacks that were inserted without fair warning and, despite the author's clear desperation, there was no plot.
Most series have one or two books which are not up to standard in comparison to the rest of the series. Sadly, I think 'Primal Desires' is one of those books. -
Bought it on a whim, as I knew of Susan from the TV Tie-in book Forever Knight: A Stirring of Dust I bought years ago.
I have to say I liked the Vampire/Werewolf clan struture she's got set up and the mating/social structure. I plan to buy the first 5 books and (and the short story: Tempting Fate) read the series in order. I'm adding her to my short list of romance authors. -
I had a little trouble keeping characters straight for a bit. Not sure if it's because I've missed books in this series (having only read 1 and 5 and this is the 6th) or because it's been so long since I read Primal Heat that it was causing me trouble. Overall, this was okay. I recall being more impressed with the other two books I read though.
-
Yum. This is the first I have read, so now I have to backtrack and read the others in this series. Got this off the shelf at the local library, and sdidn't see any others, so they must be in demand. Story lines along the path of many other authors of this field, but I like the differing versions of Vampire Clan and Families, so will be intersted to learn more.
-
Awful. LOL. Absolutely terrible. Can I give this 0 stars?
Got it in the "blind date with a book" section (in which the book is wrapped up so you don't judge it by its cover). Welp. I have learned my lesson. -
I like Sizemore's writing style. However, I really have no clue what this book was about. It was easy to read, but I think I started too late in the series although paranormal romance series tend to work as standalones. I was a little confused as to the relationships between all of the characters.
-
This book didn't do it for me at all sadly. There's was too much going on and now I find that it's the 6th book in the series and maybe if I got my hands on the first one I could love it but sadly this sort of ruined it for me and I don't at this moment plan to pick up another one of this series.
-
Wow! If you are a lover of vampire and werewolf romance, then you should read this book. Loved that it was steamy and also a bit thrilling. Yummy is such a fitting word to describe the story line in this one.
-
I really liked this book. I loved how Sophia was portrayed as a strong independent woman. A lot of books don't portray that in women. I also like how Jason, despite wanting to "be in charge" of Sophia let her be that strong independent woman.
-
I read this book in three hours...it was cute but lacking in visuals and flow. I might read another one of her books again.
-
not her best book I was disappointed.
-
I enjoyed this book...
Vampires, werewolfs...a few other supernatural effects like mindreading - throw in some romance and some steamy scenes and you have a fun, quick read! -
this book was very ummm well good, but unless you like reading -love scences- dont read it. but other than that it was a very very good book
-
Other good book. I can't wait until i start on the next book.
