I enjoyed most of the stories in this anthology. Some were more difficult to grasp than others. Topics range from life in reservations to stories of the past with mixture of Native folklore. None were badly written, but if you're not familiar with people writing in the vernacular or translating a language into another while keeping the rhythmical tempo of a Native language, it may come off as awkward. My favorite story is of Spider Woman and overall I would recommend to a friend.

Beautiful collection of stories with significant diversity in regards to writing styles and content but woven together by a common theme - the indigenous perspective

Collecting authors based on their ethnicity seems to me to be truly foolish. It is helpful, I suppose, for an ethnic literature course, except that many of the authors are quite bad, so all it shows is that... Native Americans can write? I think we all already knew that.

I think people would be pretty offended if there was a book of only white people stories, assuming that it is important that people understand the white experience. Then again, I understand the minority aspect, the underrepresented an unspoken aspect, the histories and the culture bleeding into the stories -- I get all of that, really. My problem is that writing must be about the writing for me, not the history, the culture or anything else, and this writing lacks.

Some of these stories are good. None of them are great, unfortunately. If someone is interested in reading stories that reflect a culture this is a great example, but not of good writing.
